Musing on the front porch today, I wondered how much I've spent on tobacco, considering that I just started this hobby about five years ago.

Well, my stats on tobaccocellar.org:

The cellar contains 261 tins and has 82 blends represented.

We will find 61 lbs. 4 oz. of tobacco in the collection.

This quantity of tobacco is estimated to fill approximately 9,807 of the owner's pipes.

The cellar should endure 40 yrs, 10 mos at the defined smoking pace.

Hmmm. If there are 16oz ...

I liked tobaccocellar but I wanted to group the blends by type and I couldn't find some blends. So I made an access database and exported it to excel where I colored it up.

It aint much, but I don't smoke much to begin with so I would imagine this would work for me for quite a while.

Well, I went to Meijer the other day and bought a case of mason jars to start storing tobacco with.

A couple of questions:

I'm packing ~ 2 oz in each jar. Is that a good practice? (I smoke slowly.)

I'm using one of those label makers to label my jars. How long will the little sticky label stay on the jar? Any ideas?

Is it a bad idea to occasionally open a jar of tobacco and smoke some? (I like to have several blends open at once and smoke slowly.)

What about reusing jars? ...

I don’t know how many different blends of pipe tobacco I have. I consider myself a tobacco collector more than a pipe collector. It’s likely because I live in Canukville where pipe tobacco is a precious and expensive commodity. I don’t have magnitudes of “same” blends. Most tins are “single “ blend with the exception being multiples of those that I enjoy more than others. There are few true “aromatics” in my collection.

At this point, after much reflection, I think it is “decision time”. ...

Just did an assessment of what's in the cellar to see what I need to focus on adding over the following year. Let's just call my cellar an exercise in variety! Everything listed is in "tins," ie: 50g or 2oz, depending on packaging, regardless whether they are actually in separate tins; example, an 8oz tin would be referred to as 4 tins. I find this to be a simpler form of measurement than actual weight. I can see in units of "tins" easier than grams/ounces.
