Amazing. In the face of Jeremey Brett's definitive Granada TV Holmes series---the success of which proved people don't require explosions and chase scenes to enjoy something---Holly-goddam-wood sees fit to make Sherlock a virtual superhero.

Is a 21st century update of the Holmes character. The series creators freely admit it, and have fun sprinkling Holmesian clues throughout the show. (His apartment is #221, etc.) Lots of clever wordplay hints, too, such as "House" being a synonym of a homonym for "Homes."

I was smoking a pipe last night that some of my friends deemed a Sherlock Holmes style pipe (it was more of a horn than a calabash though).

So the question came up, why don't I wear a Sherlock Holmes hat when I smoke my pipes (for the same reason I don't wear a Turban when I smoke a Hookah!)?

Now, I'm looking around for one. My question:

What was the original Deerstalker made of?

I know my Western and Fedora hats are Felt (beaver or rabbit), were these cloth though? Cause ...

I used to be one myself, some years ago - it's gone now, but it was a perfect English pub, set down right in the heart of Nashville, Tennessee, well, maybe not the heart, maybe the left elbow...

Anyway, it was run by Terry Widlake and his wife, now retired, and the pub went with them - all good things must come to an end. I had some good times there and thought I'd put it into the atmosphere...

What would Sherlock smoke? We are all well acquainted with the fact that Sherlock Holmes smoked a Victorian shag tobacco. Now in our modern times what would this be the equivalent of? Or rather if Doyal were writing today what do you think Mr. Holmes would be puffing on? And do you think any of the tobaccos that bear his name are worthy of the distinction?

Author Larry Millett of Minnesota has written five excellent Holmes stories all based around the premise of Holmes and Watson solving various crimes in the states. The best of which imo was "Sherlock Holmes & The Red Demon". If you've read all of the original stories and are looking for something new, I strongly recommend that you check these fine volumes out!

...I've yet seen, by far.

The first three books listed---the NEW annotated editions---are what I'm referring to.

Don't let the low price fool you. These are monster, 2/3rds of a phonebook each-sized volumes, hardcover, with heavy paper. Absolutely jammed with sidebar info, photos, and appendices.

With the Xmas season around the corner and all, I figured a few of you Sherlockophiles might have a use for this information.
