I'll really never forget going to my pipe club for the first time in the Spring of 2003. Up until then I had never seen great pipes save those in the pages of P&T magazine. There were about 15 members there that night and almost all were smoking the big boy's toys. There were Ashtons and Dunhills, Radice's and Ferndowns, Ascortis and Autographs. I set there smoking my $40.00 Stanwell in utter awe of what I was seeing. It was all a little intimidating too. These guys had pipes more expensive ...

If we don't like one of his pipes, then I am sure that he will feel bad (don't let me speak for him) and replace it or refund our money. The other pipes in this topic were at one time made or directly supervised by a single person. Today, to the best of my knowledge, we have no idea who makes an Ashton, Dunhill or Castello pipes.
Recently, at a local B&M, I overheard part a conversation about high grade pipes that surprised me. Their definition of high grades was much less restrictive than my interpretation. I’ve never seen a proper definition of the term and only have an intuitive understanding of it, therefore I would like to ask those in the Inner Circle what is exactly a high grade pipe. If I look at my pipe cabinets, how can I tell which ones are high grades? Maybe I don’t even have any?...

Lets dispense with the obvious...artisans want to make a pipes that are beautiful and people will buy. My question is...do artisan want people to smoke the pipes?

Since I like to go out on a limb...I bet that artisan want to make beautiful pipes that people will smoke.

How about an example... http://roushpipes.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=911

Should this pipe be smoked, put in your pipe rack or saved as an investment?

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that briar with nice tight grain made a beautiful pipe that was more likely not a good smoker.

True or false?

On another board I made a comment that my Stans smoke as well as any high dollar pipe I own. Strangely enough my contoversial comment was all but ignored. I found this slightly curious but theorize that folks who spend $500.00+ on a pipe have a bit of a hard time coming to grips with the fact that a $70.00 pipe could EVER smoke as well as their collector's pieces. A statement like this doesn't make ya' a real popular guy in high grade circles.

He was an attorney employed by the VA who made beautiful pipes in his spare time and eventually retired and made them full time. I couldn't afford them then and longed to have one. I finally saw one at Premier Pipes.com but alas it was reserved for someone else. Well it turned out that the buyer found it too large to suit him and Dick the owner sent it to me.
I love Briar calabashes. I drool over the ones tom Eltang makes, I have been drooling over the tonni nielsen over at pulversbriar.com. the problem is that they are not cheap! for that kind of money I want a pipe that smokes well. I once bought an Aldo velani Briar calabash and it was not good. I was wondering if the more expensive smoke good? any one willing to share their experiences with Briar calabashes?

It seems an easy enough question to answer but if you think on it a bit it's really not. Of course you're a pipe smoker! We're all smokers of pipes but some of here also collect pipes that seldom get smoked and I suspect that there's even some folks here like me who occasionally buy pipes that will likely NEVER get smoked!

So now comes the question of how we define a pipe smoker and a pipe collector. I have good friends who collect pipes that cost several thousand dollars. These pipes are ...

For certainly he has invented so many new shapes I wonder if a book of his work will ever come to his enthusiasts to drool over? Well I guess one can wish....

Here's my newest addition to my group of Alan Stevenson hand made pipes. As you can see, I already have it loaded with Prince Albert and am puffing on it as I type this. Sorry for the photo quality, which doesn't do it justice, but I only have a camera phone. This is a fine looking apple, which doesn't carry the Stevenson nomenclature because he had initially carved it for his own use. I was just lucky enough to acquire it.

I've seen a few Dunhill pipes with the stars following the nomenclature but something on this pipe just doesn't seem right.

It's from this auction currently running on EBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=370155118081

I didn't think they put star or flame designations on shell pipes, did they? And all of the stars I've seen looked liked asterisks, not actual stars. I'm no Dunhill expert, but am I right in thinking something ...

Here's the first pic folks! What a sick blast!

I've been totally blown away with the quality of Bruce Weaver's blasts lately. His ring grain blasts are nothing short of amazing! Reminicent of friend Richard Essereman's comments about JT Cooke, Bruce isn't just sandblasting now, he's sand carving!

The pipe will be a deeply blasted and dark stained group 5 apple/nosewarmer with a short bakelite stem and a wide open draw. It should be ready inside of a month.Of course I'll post pics ...

Look on e-bay and you'll be amazed! All the stuff that's been bashed and ridiculed for not being up to the standards of Murray's production is being ravenously bought up!
