Anyone given Cornell & Diehl's new Burelys a try?

Morn' Son, I have tried all three, but not enough to comment on them, but I know alot including yourself can't wait to hear, BF#1 is the strongest, my fav. with red Va.& Perique, BF#2, is almost all Burley Both Dark & White, with a little red Va. no perique, this is the softest of the three,I've only had 1 bowl of # 3 so won't comment just yet, Dad tongue

I just finished puffing on a bowl of C&D Burley #2... I've been putting it through the paces these past few days.

Brother Ken is right that it's chock-a-block with burley, though the aroma of the tin tricked me somewhat. (Maybe that's a hint that some age will do it good... we shall see.)

It's mild and very not sweet at all to my palate. The burleys I like best are of the toasty/nutty/sweet variety, so CDB#2 is a little flat for my liking. The room note and the first 1/3 of the bowl are both kind of cigarettish. Later on, there's a sort of hickory undertone, and the occasional whiff of the condimental Virginia, something a bit rich and winey (sounds like many of the girls I went to Vassar with.)

It's a quality tobacco, but not really in the zone for me fresh out of the can. That cigarette taste burning at the pace of a flake is too much.

I'm going to let some of it dry out, and let some of it get a little older, and see if it gets friendlier... again, just like many of the girls I went to Vassar with. Wink

I acquired tins of all three in my last TAD attack, but will not get to any for a time yet - so this is a very interesting discussion.

Might any of you describe the preparation? Are they broken flake, thinly sliced flake, large square flake, rubbed out, etc.?

Hi Kap, The flakes are 1/8 inch thick, 2 inches long and very easy to rub out, C&D has more work to do on flake prep., Ken tongue

Revisited C&D BF#2 today... after a little while open, that dark burley flavor was much richer, almost cigar leaf in a way, and the smooth notes smoother. Kind of made my head swim, actually, but owing to my very light lunch, I think.

I thought #2 was a stout version of older burley flakes. Nice dark fired taste with a bit of something giving it some sweetness. Best of the three for me. But all good.

Just tried my first bowl of BF#2.

Tin aroma: wheat toast and honey.

It's a broken flake, mottled brown shades, fairly typical looking. Moisture level is just about right on. Rubs out easily.

From first light the flavor is burley; albeit dark and plodding, rather than toasty.

For about the first 1/3 of the bowl, I wonder if this is all there is to it. It burns well, and smokes fine, but that's not enough to interest me.

As it progresses though, there is a secondary flavor rising in the background. At first, it seems like an indistinct nuisance, but as it develops, it it becomes more apparent, and I too think that it has a definite cigar leaf quality to it.

As this cigar note aspect reaches fruition, the blend now has a much more robust flavor from the intertwining of the dark burley foundation and the cigar-like layer on top.

I feel...well...I'll say it...I feel like an old man smoking this. Believe it or not, I actually mean this is a good way. Smile

There is nothing delicate or symphonious about this blend. It just has that kind of no-nonsense, no-frills, musty, quality.

After 2/3 of the bowl, I let it go out and relight after 1/2 hour. The same robustness soon re-emerges, and now I also get occasional tinges of VA peeking out from the edges. This is turning out to be quite enjoyable. This uncomplicated headiness continues to the end of the bowl.

Surprisingly, this has some strength to it - medium to moderately strong, I'd say. Not something I expected from a burley flake.

I did not buy BF#1 or #3, but for now it doesn't matter. I think I'm happy with BF#2. I hope subsequent bowls will replicate this experience. I think they will.

After a few bowls of #2, courtesy of Doc Manhattan, I'll give a little review.

There is an aroma of both classic molasses topped burleyweed and also a musty funkiness I've only experienced when opening old tins of English or oriental tobaccos. Not sure if this is borne of the blend itself or the moisture level maybe too high during the pressing/aging process. The flakes are typical C&D, more like slices of pressed ribbon as they rub out into ribbon quite easily. Not at all like a true flake, but better than they used to put out.

The tobacco tastes like classic burleyweed upon first light and during the first few minutes, possessing a dark fired flavor. That is followed by the emergence of a definite cigar-like note. By mid bowl you move into a dark flavor, pretty strong but not at all bad, reminiscent of some of the strong Gaw-Hogg dark flakes. This is stout stuff, I get the nic buzz big time from it. Best experience was in a prince with it's shallow bowl, best flavor came from the Peterson Rosslare Royal Irish deep bent billiard.

The virginia immediately made itself known and makes this stuff much more palatable for me than Wessex burley slices or Solani aged burley flake as it acts as a pinch of salt does with potatoes, giving a mouth watering edge to an otherwise dry taste.

This stuff may very well be quite good with a few years on it. Many thanks Doc! Cool
