Hey BoBīs, just some preliminary data gathering for interest in a BoB Pipe of the Year (POY). As we get an idea if itīs a go or not, we can then find a style, price range, and, of course, a maker.

A POY usually works thus: a group commissions a pipe design from a carver they trust. When the design is finalized (often with a "showroom model" carved for reference) interested members of the groups sign up, pony up the money, and those pipes are made and distributed. That's it.

What Mr E's doing right now is a smart move, just a straw poll to see if there's interest before going to the hassle of the rest of it, which (as you can imagine) is time-intensive. But just so new folks are very clear: this poll is not a commitment to buy. Cool

It would be cool to have a POY for the BoB. Hopefully it will be a shape I like!

Well I guess that's one of the most important steps with a crowd as diverse as this one,,,

Shape, cost, finish... Quite a bit of diversity in all of those here on the BoB. Anyone else up for a bent apple blast in the $75-125 range? Laughing

I'm in within a reasonable price. The shape/finish/whatever is less important to me than participating in (what I view as) a community building experience. Plus it's a great story to have when showing people the pipe. And very... I guess special to me because only myself and fellow Brothers would enjoy those specific pipes. Unique and all that.

We may have difficulty in agreeing upon a shape or what is a "fair" price. If memory serves me right (and it may not) the ones Mark Tinsky made for us a few years back were in the $200 range, with lots-o-options that could vary the price, but it's the best flake pipe I own.

On a previous pipe board we had POY for a few years in a row, and the sub-$100 ones weren't very good. Kirk Bosi did them one year, around or just over a $100 and it was a nice pipe (still have mine). One year someone had connections in Turkey and we had meerschaums carved, two different styles, under $100 and pretty nice. It had our clubs name in rather large raised letters on the stem.

I hope we're all somewhat flexible here so this can happen.

Price will be an important factor as we go along, obviously. As we get a feeling for how many of us are interested we can explore a price range that we are comfortable with. The "cheaper" we opt for will most likely limit our possibilities, but letīs wait and see for now.

Letīs give this poll, say, another week or so. Then those of us interested can put our heads together and come up with the specifics..
