THIS...was an awesome movie. Ditto Michael Collins if we're talking about the British oppresion of Ireland.

Only the other day down the pub me and the lads were complaining about the repression of the British at the hands of the Romans.

The major difference being that Rome doesn't occupy half of your Island.

Ok.. let me take 6/32 of your home and then we will debate the mathmatical exactness of how much of your stuff I have.

Sure makes that $30, one-night-only, silly, green novelty "drinking hat" made in China seem kind of pointless.

Well, that's what the liquor is for.

Who needs history? Drink!* cheers

You know "Danny Boy" was written by an English lawyer, right? You should crack a book instead of getting your history from youtube motion pictures. I'm sorry if the math crack upset you, but don't use hyperbole when arguing a point like that. You did post a politically themed thread on an international forum: you may get a contentious response or two.

Mr_Jeff, to note, PB's last response was 1/2 personal and 1/2 on-topic to the tread. Your follow-up went to 6/32 on topic, with the remainder personal--still douchey. Laughing

The Irish got boned, and are still bitter about it. As they should be.

Of course one could argue that the current Republic is occupying 26/32 of our stuff.

As I don't give a hoot about who wants to argue over a speck of green in an ocean of blue floating in an infinity of airless black which formed from a singularity approximately 13 billion years ago you can have it all and call yourself King Billy.

13/16? albino The problem is, it's all still justification. Occupation is occupation, and is uncomfortable for the original inhabitants at best.

Original inhabitants?

They are all long dead and gone. But if you insist in handing the island back to the Vikings then so be it. Or did you want to go back further than that?

Original inhabitants have family, history and cultural identity, too. Not just that of the oppressive force that gets instilled. If any semblance of that (is able/allowed to/still) remain(s), there is and will be conflict.

So, you think we should explain this same fact to the Kurdish, Native Americans, Basque, etc? That their people are long dead and gone, too, as were whoever they oppressed to get there? I mean, I see your point, but if there's any folks that have claim to the land, and someone else takes it, it's uncomfortable--right and wrong are irrelevant, and it's still a poor excuse. My grandmother was full Native from North Carolina. I have family on a reservation. I see both sides of this.

On another note, we're a step ahead of the original sentiment: not blindly having a gay-ole-type drinkin' green beer to a "saint" we know nothing about and peeling ourselves off the floor the next day wondering what we're gonna tell our boss. Laughing

Speak for yourself!! drunken

As an offspring of Hungarian gypsy jews on one side and a mutt mix of some sort of Brit/ Choctaw Indian mess on the other, I find the whole situation worthy of a good falling down drunk, as there's no other reasonable solution to the issue. In a couple of hundred more years everyone will be displaced all over again anyhow.....

...yes, but as I stated, we're not blindly doing this. Whether or not we choose to go blurry and do it anyway, all things considered, that's another story. Laughing Ah, the power of active decisions! Cool

As for my history Jeff since you don't like 'red herring'
Feel free to pm me your number and we can discuss the situation.
I assure you that my knowledge of the situation is far broader and deeper than you are interested in hearing.
I didn't asshole you, you assholed me.

Gumball. The British changed the world, like every other dynasty before them.
The United States IS an extension of that Empire, it would be easy to say a continuation of that empire much the way Byzantium Empire was an extension of the Roman Empire. I'm not anti-British by any means. I just think in this particular instance they are wrong. Had they assimilated the populace, or even granted pseudo citizenship the whole thing would be different. But they didn't.

I think it odd that Americans think of the Founding Fathers who were British Colonist as freedom fighters an yet think of Native Gaels as Terrorist.

There's got to be a member of this forum from Ireland, somebody please help this guy. I really don't want to talk on the phone with you. I already know what it will be like based on your inability to avoid resorting to swearing and name calling. At this point I don't care about your history, just as I am reasonably sure you don't care about mine; and I have a suspicion that it would involve a lot of "my great, great something or other experienced such and such". So, have fun tonight eating your corned beef(which you can thank the jews for, not the irish), re-reading Ulysses, drinking Shamrock Shakes, or however you want to observe the 17th.

Me? My plans? Well, since you asked. Every year for St. Patrick's day I like to build a scaled down version of Nelsons Column and then I blow it up. I'm done. I think I'll go smoke my pipe now.

And you show your ignorance once again as I have stated on many occasions I am not Irish, I am American. But considering you only come around once every few months to voice your opinion or attempt to steal forum members I wouldn't expect you to know what has or has not occurred here.

So go enjoy your smoke and your models.
