PostSubject: I now live in Boston. (edited post)   Wed Jul 25, 2012 7:30 pm

Hello Gentlemen (and Gentlewomen),

I have now been in Boston for a long enough period of time that I have seen the sun set twice. Yet I have barely seen anything more. Sure, the inside of a walmart where in I was in queue for 45 minutes. The buildings fleet past I search for the next place I need to go. All of the things you need when you move into an unfurnished apartment.

This move is not just a temporary change while I work towards my Masters. No, I now live in this city. Wow. That is a big thought. When you leave everything familiar (family, friends, places, sites and smells) and find yourself in a new place. Not just new, but far removed from those familiar things, in fact, nearly a whole country, it is rather a large leap. Though I understood this intellectually, I was so busy getting everything packed, moved, shipped and prepared that only now does the full enormity of the change sink in.

Well, I have not been on the forum for nearly a week, I regret not seeing all of the neat posts, but am back as often as time permits.

------- Previous OP ---------

You may remember I posted a question asking for opinions regarding Baltimore vs Boston?

Thankfully, I was accepted to all of the schools to which I applied, however it is the masters program at Hebrew College in Boston that I will be attending. This is a big move. Across the country. Which is exciting and I am looking forward to it. Now I am just looking for a place to live and a part-time job/freelance work (graphic design and printing). Hoping to move sometime in the middle of August so I can get myself oriented to the area before diving into the new school year.

I really appreciate all of the feedback and ideas you guys provided in the last thread, and welcome any advice you or assistance you might have to help me around Boston. Looking forward to going to the L.J. Peretti tobacconist shop. Cool

It is a plan. Cool

You would not happen to have a lead on a cheaper place to live in the brookline/newton area would you?

I havenīt been back in 20 years so it might have (probably) evolved. It was great drinking, cheap Chinese food, and the same seediness youīd expect frome Times Square. Donīt piss off any Southies though. Those guys play for keeps! Exclamation

Good to know MisterE.

Right now my life consists of packing.

Packing.

Packing.

oh, yeah, more packing.

And I do not even have all that much stuff.

Any must go to places in Brookline and Newton? A good pub or bar? Tobacconist other than L.J. Peretti that I should know about?

Danish_... uh, I mean Dock, that is the plan. I look forward to meeting the guys. The nice thing is that the September meeting is just before classes begin, so I can get a nice pressure free feel for the club.

Well, I have updated the OP for this thread and have now updated my avatar. Why? Well, the first is because I like you guys and that it a good idea to update you. As to the second? That is because my good brother Dreadgerbil sent me this wonderful picture of a pipe smoking dragon. It means a lot to me that distance geographically does not automatically translate into distance mentally.

Enjoy the photo:

Glad you're safe and sound, Kiev. Moving across town is usually an anxiety-stricken moment for me, I'm not sure if a move that big would completely destroy me or if it was so enormous I'd just get a kick out of the adventure and forget everything else. Laughing

School starts soon, yes?

Kiev,
No more Combat Zone in Boston, that has been long gone. Actually it was a fun spot to hit before and after the Red Sox Games when I was a younger lad.

I was not sure how I would handle it. (I tend to be an anxiety filled guy burdened with OCD as well) I can say it has been rough. Thankfully, the apartment stuff is done, school does start soon but not for a little while yet, which gives me time to explore and find a job and all of the fun, and 'fun', stuff that comes with being in a new place. It is exciting and it is a big adventure. But especially without all of my stuff (it is still on the way) it has felt at times like a little like a vacation without the fun. If you know what I mean.

Figured as much. My roommate is seeing a 'sox game tomorrow actually. I will be exploring the city.

On another note, can you PM me the pipe club info?

Any info and past meeting letters for the Sherlock Holmes Pipe Club can be seen at shpcboston.org and when I get the address of the meeting place I'll send it off to you which is in Stoughton, MA some distance outside of Boston.
