PostSubject: Another hooked and thanks.    Wed Aug 01, 2012 3:59 am

Welp it definitely is way easier to influence people into pipe smoking while over here. Last deployment I got my buddy Chuck into pipes and had a bunch of infantry guys who enjoyed the smell and were smoking and/or had ordered pipes before I left. Our friend Sean68 is now a member here and loving this hobby as well as engaging in PAD and TAD, hopefully once his locale slows a little we will see him back around here again. Sean and I got out buddy Josh started in the hobby, and hopefully that takes off for him too.
The guys here are starting to show interest in pipe smoking, I am questioned about different types of pipes and tobaccos. One of the guys has his wife sending him a pipe and another just ordered a briar today....Dr. Grabow Omega for his first. I brought probably a years worth of tobacco that I am sharing amongst the lot of guys, but it is worth it to get others into this hobby with its wealth of good conversation.....and made up stories lol. And now, I have to order a bunch more pipe tampers because I keep giving them away when someone gets a pipe, of course I used a dang pen as a tamper for the first 6 months of pipe smoking darn it all. I think I am going to order one of those mixed lots of cobs from MM so I can get people going without them having to wait on a pipe to arrive.
I am still a noob, but with the knowledge I have gained from you fine gentlemen I am able to help get others on their way and that is something I am darn thankful for. Without this forum and the help of y'all in answering others and my own questions I wouldn't be anywhere near as far along in this as I am. Thank you brothers for all your help in learning.
Let's hear about your influences in this endeavor, I know you all have influenced and helped people along in this outside the forum...we all know about George and his neighbor with the cob and spear gun lol.

Welp mail came in today. I got a bunch of tobacco, pipes, and snuff. In the pipes was my order of cobs so without any delay I let the guys at them and my tobacco:

They all chose to smoke Altadis baklava except the third guy who chose Frog Morton. I just ran out to grab a pic of them all right quick and had to get back to work. Marines and contractors bonding over a nice smoke.

Outstanding! Give them all a hearty Semper Fi' from me! You should see if you can get a spent .50 cal casing to use as tamper. Heck of a story to go along with it, years down the road!

I don't think customs would appreciate that too much brother. I can get those in the states, I'd rather not take the chance of trouble. I will give them a Semper Fi from you though.

There's a lot of guys near me who shoot .50 cal, I'll see if I can procure one. Usually they take them; reloading makes them cheaper to shoot, so it seems... Smile

Cool pic of the guys, they earned their smoke and a good cob. Cool Semper Fidelis, gents.

Ahaha, true enough. I forgot customs didn't give us the rubber glove treatment on the way home. Not always the case, though

Sat outside this morning and had a smoke with Joe who is another contractor over here that is enjoying pipes. I gave him a cob also which he has tried and likes, but he definitely like his Dr. Grabow filled with FMOTT,

errrrrrr........Kyle, what is it lives near you that they hunt with .50 cal? Bigfoot? affraid Or is .50 cal just used for range shooting?

@kaiser - nice thread, great pics, although I don't like the sound of where Sloppy Joe is suggesting you might hide a .50 cal spent case to smuggle it through customs! There's easier ways to get a tamper brother!
lol!

I actually have a tamper from over here that I made last trip here. I was able to cut a branch off a tree, strip the bark, dry the wood, sand, and polyurethane. Had to figure out an end piece but it worked well enough.

What have you never been rabbit hunting with a .50 cal? lol!

I am happy to report that out of the 8 guys I gave cobs to recently that 5 are all having a nightly smoke from them, 1 has an occasional smoke, and only 2 took them to be cool like the other kids and haven't smoked them yet. Hey at least the two have a cob for when peer pressure sets in lol. Out of the 5, 1 is rocking FMOTT, 2 keep diggin into my Milonga, 1 is rocking PS Bullseye flake, and one is enjoying Erinmore and Baklava. Just figured I'd update the situation.

Yeah, and I'll bet you anything that a few of them stick with it. Congrats again, Kaiser, on a fine job!

The last towboat I was on (back in '06) I turned on 4 people to the Pipe, and 2 of them still smoke a pipe today. One still smokes aromatics and the other prefers VA's.

If we can all keep getting people into pipes our community will just continue to grow. All it takes is for someone walking down the street to see another smoking a pipe and for them to have interest and we grow. Direct or indirect influence either way is awesome...unless you are George and have a spear gun that is.

Lately I have gotten to spend a good bit of time smoking with a young Marine here. Hooked him up with 2 cobs and a straight stem black colored briar. He's been enjoying Treebeard, Erinmore, a couple aromatics, and today Frog Morton cheers I am relatively certain based on how much he is enjoying it that he will continue smoking back home as well. He's also lurking round the boards here somewhere and hopefully will eventually become a BoB member.
