PostSubject: Scary world we live in...   Thu Sep 20, 2012 10:01 pm

My girlfriend and I have decided to move somewhere different than originally planned. We looked up apartments all over the town (Ludington). We found a great looking one, and emailed about it. After one email, we got a LONG email explaining how the owners were in Africa for mission trips, and that they just knew and prayed about how we were the ones to rent their house. They gave us an application form, and Michelle filled it out. Soon after, we got email after email from them telling us that they want us to take care of the place. After we stopped emailing back, we gotta call from Africa. The man said, in a thick foreign accent, "Michelle? Zach? Check your email. Bye". They continued to call. Call after call, we almost called the police. Than we got an email that said, "You wire 600 dollars to us in Africa and we'll over-night the keys and documents. We have already have a box with your name and address on it." So we blocked them. Later we drove around looking for other places to live, and we found the place we emailed about. There was a sign out front with a name and phone number to call. So we did, and found out that the house is for sale, not for rent. Someone took a photo of the place, and put it up for rent as a scam. So we get to contact the police about this.

That sounds like a similar situation with a house my wife and I looked into renting. After the first email in which they sent an application and told us to wire we blocked them as well. Luckily for us we never gave them any information beyond our email address.

There's nothing worse than a theif...especially one that does it from across the ocean. That's a scary deal there. I'm glad you got out of it. Good luck finding a place.

*shrug* All too common. I can smell scam stink a mile away, usually I mess with them, saying how I would happily trade them $10,000 in gold for the keys, but they'd have to send me the keys first and I'd have my uncle hand deliver the gold if they could give me an address. Laughing

There's a reason why scammers try so hard: it works. How? I'm not so sure. Maybe my past sharpened my senses a little. Makes me protective of my family and friends that almost get caught up in such things. Kind of funny in a macabre way, so long as people are wise about it.

Thanks for the luck. Overall it was a scary deal, but funny at the same. I was going to email them back about it, and ask if they'll send us a couple elephant tusks also for decoration.
We are going house hunting today, wish us luck on that! Looks like it's time to find a nicotine HIGH tobacco. I'm in the process of quitting cigs, and I don't want to pick them right back up while trying to move, and work. Gonna be fun.

Good luck in finding a place. Not the most enjoyable experience, but when it works out, boy is it worth the effort.

Zack - I'm really glad you didn't fall for the fraud.

My father is 85 and recently had a scam operated on him by letter and telephone - luckily he is a smart guy and hasn't lost it as he got older. I passed it onto my local police who informed me how common the scam was and how the scumbags deliberately targeted older folk. This scam also originated in Africa.

It is great that you're sorted with a property and thanks for the invite to the house warming! The good news is that since I recently won the Canadian Lottery I'm pretty flush with cash and as a house warming present I would like to lodge a generous amount in your bank account. If you would just email me your bank account details, account password and dob...... Wink

I remember screwing with one guy to the point he was threatening me over the phone. I kept telling him the money was on its way via mail/Western Union, and he never got it. Damn guy spent weeks calling me. Laughing One day he said he was going to find out where I lived and kill me. I told him I'd send him double if he calmed down. This went on again for another week... then he flipped out, whined about how I wasted his time, and said he'd report me to the police. You read that right.

I have it all recorded someplace for use in my music. It's quite funny.

Cool

Whoa. Where did that come from? I miss something while I was away?

Funny story, Zach. Why the change in destination? No jobs in Muskee-land?

No Jobs... No housing we could afford... Lud-ville, just seemed like a better place. Plus I can keep my job at the hospital, better than a McDonalds job I could have applied for. I was gonna move to Muskegon for her, but It wasn't something I was ecstatic about... She had all her friends, and I don't know anyone or a thing about the area. Also I got my best bud moving in with us, and we might live right next to Thistleoak, (who by the way, I'm going squirrel hunting with today!!!!)

I'm dealing with a lot of scammers while trying to sell my car. It's friggin' endless.

Always make sure you're dealing with someone local (local phone number etc). I use one-off email addresses and a Google Voice account to shield my identity. I always google people's phone numbers, email and names. Do basic background checks on the local court system. I want to see records. Everyone has them so I should see something; traffic ticket, divorce, marriage etc.

Never give your phone number in an initial email response. Tell them you will call them.
