Blend Suggestions for Newer Pipe Smokers

Below, set up in tables (sort of) are a number of blends that have been suggested by a few of the members here. They have been set up into catagories corresponding to different types of blends. It should be obvious what those are, along the left side.

First: If you don't know much about the different types of pipe tobaccos, following is a fairly good discussion at Pipedia...generally a good resource.

http://pipedia.org/index.php?title=Pipe_Tobaccos

In terms of the blends suggested here...the specific instructions to the members were that they were to select blends that they believed newer pipe smokers would respond to positively. In other words, these are not their favorite blends...well, they might be I guess...but it's typical that after 5 or 10 or 30 years of pipe experience that someone smokes different kinds of blends than someone earlier in the game finds enjoyable.

Second: If you don't know much about pipe mechanics (how to load, how to smoke, how to pack, light, tamp...how tight, how fast, how often...etc., etc., etc. below is another link, this one to a different section at Pipedia, going through a number of basics.

http://pipedia.org/index.php?title=Pipe_Packing_and_Smoking_techniques#Varieties

Understand that among pipe smokers, there is likely to be a range of opinion leading to a range of practices. We're all different...we do things differently, believing it's the right way because it's worked well for us. And we also like different types and specific blends of tobacco...which plays into what they would recommend to others...as you'll see.

If you haven't yet discovered the Tobacco Review Site...it's a good thing to know about. Even if the reviews of others are no more than just their own opinion, it's a good way to get to know 'generalities'. If EVERYONE likes something, there has to be a reason for it...and if VERY FEW people like it, etc. Also, a very fun aspect is the advanced search engine in the upper right corner. Try using it to find a blend that a combination of Virginia, Burley and Oriental tabaccos but that has no Latakia...and is in flake form. You can change variables and pretty much come up with whatever you want. Fun, if nothing else. But you might also search for some of the members from this thing (most use the same names there) and see what else they like. What I've done is to find several guys that have the sames tastes that I do and see what they have to say about this or that blend. Beats listening to some guy you know nothing about.

Below you will find the blends...we're starting out with 8 members recommending...we'll likely add more over time.

Since the entire thing was too long for one post the suggested blends will be listed in successive posts.

New lists of suggested blends can be PM'd to Blackhorse...in the same format as the following posts. I'll put them into the table format for you...just send the list in the same order, etc.

Comments: My suggestion is to take some time and smoke ONLY one or two blends of each TYPE at a time giving at least a 50g/2oz worth BEFORE going on to another TYPE. Don't mix smoking a VA then an ARO etc. LEARN what the different TYPES are first.

Comments: I'm not listing a Burley as I don't have much experience with 'em and can't really offer any suggestions. I'm also not suggesting any non-Lat orientals as none of the ones I smoke are really well-suited for newer smokers.

Comments: This list is targeted at cigarette smokers who are trying to convert to pipes. These aren't necessarily even my favorite blends in their respective categories, just the ones I think someone struggling to drop the cancer sticks will have the most success with. They should give a newbie both a decent idea of what each genre is about while satisfying their cravings for a cigarette without tearing apart their tongue.

Comments: Sip your pipe very slowly. Try at least one blend from each category listed to get a feel for the range of flavors they show off. Pick a favorite type then explore more blends in that type. Clean your pipe every day without fail. Tamp VERY lightly.

Suggested by: Simple Man

Blend / Type / Brand / Blend / Notes

Aromatic / Boswell / Pennsylvania Dutch Treat / Non-biting blend
VA / McClelland / Christmas Cheer / Annual Blend
VA/Per / Orlik / Golden Sliced
Burley / John Patton / Storm Front
Mild English / McClelland / Frog Morton on the Town / The Turkish McC adds to this makes it nice
Full English / Boswell / North Woods
Oriental / John Patton / Oriental Dusk
Wild Card / McClelland / Wilderness / (VA/Latakia/Oreintal blend)

Comments: On the flakes, try using the cube and gravity fill method.
It will provide a nice easy smoke and you will cut down on a lot of aggravations on trying to get those flakes just right.
(There are UTube videos that show this easy method.)
