I found this today at an antique store.

It is marked "Block Meerschaum" and I think it is a Peterson.

Can anyone tell me anything about this pipe?

First I've never seen an ALL BLACK meer made by Peterson and the stem work is NOT typical of ANY I've ever seen on any Peterson Meers. They usually have the shank capped with a nickel band and mil style push bits, but heh, anything is possible !! Twisted Evil

Interesting pipe. I've been seeing quite a few black meers on Fleabay lately.
By looking at the shape of the P on the stem I think the pipe you have is made by Pioneer, but I might be wrong.

Both look like the pioneer P to me. The back loop begining the p is open and not closed on the Pioneer P.

PETERSON P

Pioneer P.

Hope this helps. MIKE

Thanks for that Very Happy

I need new glasses but now that i look closer it appears the one on ebay has no loop. But the glare on the photo and the fact that I really do need new glasses could affect how much detail I can make out.

Darn, whatever it is, it looks lovely! Kinda really ornamental, like a piece of jet jewelry. Congrats!

It's African Meerschaum, if that makes any difference. Natural color is mottled off-white & yellowish brown. Not bad stuff -- just very neutral tasting compared to briar.

FWIW

What a Face

Thanks for the lead.

I'm certain it is a Pioneer Meerschaum.

They seem to have a reputation as good smokers.

I am wnxious to try it out.

+1. I have one by Barling in Apple shape. I like it. It smokes neutral and dry, requires no fussing -- at least compared to a block Meer -- and, therefore, often goes on vacation with me.

Yes, and I believe Peterson has been using the African meer for years now? My understanding, having never owned one, is they don't color the way Turkish meer does. But they do have a rustic charm to them.

That may explain why this pipe is dyed black. Thanks for that.
