PostSubject: $50-70 name brand pipes   Thu Feb 07, 2013 12:19 am

As previously mentioned, I'm a new pipe smoker, the owner of a few cobs and a recently purchased estate briar- ( KW- pictures to follow- as I, too, believe---> no pics= it didn't happen, or there abouts....! )

In my recent searches of the new pipes available from some of the main, name brand, readily available briars, I have come across more than one attractive pipe that retails for $70.00 or less. Notably, savinelli and tsuge.

Any community thoughts on the above?

I'm currently on the hunt for a particular estate Peterson that I have yet to lay eyes on, but I am sure to find when the time is right...!

Thank you Brothers....

I have many Sav's in various price points that I have bought in the last 3+ decades and can say that you WON'T go wrong with any of that firms products. I have some of their pipe in your price range ( they were less back in the early 70's Razz ) up to some of their High Grades and EVERY Sav I own has been a GOOD pipe and they get better as years go by. I'm personally not familiar with the Tsuge brand but can wholeheartedly recomend Savinelli's pipes Razz
I own several Pete's as well and it's the same with their pipes as well. Razz

I have a Sav Sabbiata 910 I bought new for about $70 last year just because I liked the look -- it has a slightly dropped bowl, the shank has a tapered waist and the mouthpiece is a very comfy lucite fishtail. It broke in quickly and smokes dry. It's not an artisan briar, but it has become a welcome companion, and I've paid more for worse.

Savinelli is the way to go. They make very reasonably priced pipes at relatively high smoking quality. I don't have any Tsuges but they do look pretty tempting.

Peterson used to have several lines in that price range, but lately all of their prices have gone up. You could try to find a Peterson Kapet. They still retail in that range.

i second the savinelli recommendation.

i also own one tsuge and it smokes great in my experience!
only downside it the pipe i got was finished with lacquer/glaze of some sort so it kinda bubbled near the rim. no biggie for what i paid... and the stain job on it is beautiful.... amazing grain for <$50

Nice to see Savinellis getting some love. Too many people disregard them. They make a wide range of pipes from the same briar sources, and every one that has passed through my hands has been a fine smoke. In fact, I still recall an Estella, a Sav second, that was as ugly as a pipe can be, but smoked like a dream. I traded it off when I just couldn't look at the thing anymore, and still, sometimes, regret my rashness. I've had many 'better' pipes that didn't smoke as well.

There's a few Savs that I've come across that are sans the balsa 6mm filter system, but because of said system, I typically avoid them. So, I'll probably throw "Stanwell" out there for good measure.

Kyle's correct, Stanwell is another firm that makes a good looking and good smoking production pipe though they are priced a bit more than many of the Sav's are. As for the "filter system" Kyle mentions, I have a few that were designed as "filter" pipe and have found that they smoke equally as well without the filters as with. Unless it's really a "thing" with you, I wouldn't let that deter you from buying one .

I found (and still find) it difficult to smoke filterless filter pipes, even with those fancy (or not-so-fancy "blanks" you can put in them...). Wherein Pete's open shank chambers make for an interesting design to trap moisture, the vacant filter areas seem to encourage condensation and moisture production...with the exception of cobs, it hasn't worked well for me as a generic rule. Which is sad, there's some Savinelli pipes that are tempting from the outside. I'll just have to find the ones that omit the balsa/6mm system. Sad

I'm on the Sav bandwagon as well, Flowjack. Monbla's driving, but you can have a seat next to me. Razz

FWIW the Sav Sabbiata pipe I mentioned above has no filter, possibly due to the "waist" design of the shank. But it could be that nothing in that particular line is designed to take the Sav filter. I got mine at CoJ and I see the price has crept up to $75. Still a bargain, I'd say.

Thank you all for weighing in....

Was planning on purchasing a Peterson as my first "new" pipe but with the price point of the Savs, and your feedback I think I may be leaning in their direction- save me a seat!

Stanwell certainly has some good looing pipes also- thanks for the recommendation.

I don't have a thing about removing the filter. If its anything like a cob, I imagine there shouldn't be too much of a difference. However, I'm sure there are a few technical factors I'm overlooking.

I don't want to get too far ahead of myself either as I still have a lot to learn!

So many pipes, so much to learn.....

Another vote for Savinelli from a Brother that owns 2 of them.

Don't let the balsa filter worry you, they're actually not bad at all. I use them and have no problems.

All I know is Monbla's one of those "Artisan Pipe" owners, so...I'm shocked he's even associating with rubes like us.

Cool

I've owned a handful of Savinelli's. All but one of those have been estates Savinelli's. I've since sold off all of the estates one's mostly because they were too big for my liking or I didn't care for the aesthetics. The one Savinelli that I still own and smoke regularly is a Duca Carlo bent billiard that I purchased a long time ago when I first took up the pipe. It was terrible to break in. I almost gave up on it but it eventually succumbed and it is now one of my very favorite pipes to smoke.
