Fitting name considering my locale... I picked this one up since the last Grabow I re-did got sold off.

I took my dremel to the crown of the bowl and rounded it out, inside and out. Then I took some 320 grit to take the scratches out of the wood (long and tedious). Once I sanded off most of the old stain (still leaving a little bit) I taped off the beveled crown of the bowl and stained it with 10 coats of pure unadulterated orange stain (thus the deep orange-red you see). After that dried I removed the tape, stained the rest of the bowl and shank with a 1:6 ratio of dye to alcohol, sanded that down twice to knock off the brightness and then applied a couple of layers of wax.

I didn't do anything really special like my typical ribbon rustication or crazy designs. I fell in love with the wood grain patterns to do anything else. I really wish the guys at Dr. Grabow would quit covering those up with their typical chocolate brown stain, they really are some half decent looking pieces of briar underneath all that mess.

I have some Grabows with wonderful grain and no fills. The factory gets the block, runs it through the machines to make the shape that is scheduled. I don't know if they are allowed to say "This is a wonderous piece of briar" and set it aside for special processing. They make the pipes to reach a certain price point/market and they do make good pipes for the money!

Nice job SC! cheers cheers cheers

Looks like an ideal flake pipe. I am really digging MacBaren Old Dark Fired right now in a couple different briars.

I must say - that's one of the best looking Dr. Graobw pipes I've ever seen.

I agree with bosun1 - mass produced at a price point, so grain in unimportant at the factory.

It just irks me sideways... I guess I'm a sucker for beauty in nature. Thanks guys Very Happy

I'd love to get an order of unfinished Grabows direct from the factory to just play around with all day long. What I really need to do is get that dremel back on the block of briar I've got in my 10x6 cell stuffed with a 2 car garage and get to shaving away at it.

Isn't Old Dark Fired awesome?! I only got a sample of it, but I'm gonna try to get some tins of it stocked up. I love it!

Myself i'm thankful they don't set the fancier briars aside as then they would want to charge more for them and you'd not get to work your magic. I bet you get more satisfaction smoking the pipes you've reworked the same as i do. Tedious time well spent.

PS. Nice birds eye & "Ring of Fire" grain on that one. A pipe John'y Cash would of smoked if i ever seen one.

You're absolutely right Hawker.

As of now I have yet to smoke any of the pipes I refinished. My last one was sent off to a buddy in Texas and the others haven't made it into rotation yet.
