All POY's, all black sandblast, all in good condition. A pretty neat collection actually. A few of them I'd like to have, too bad they're not spitting it up.

That would be a nice collection to have.

I think that works out to about $140 per pipe... at that price, they probably could split them up, but the collection as a whole is much more impressive. I'd talk 'em down below $3,000, it'd make it easier to smoke 'em. It's two weeks worth of pipes! Laughing

I would be willing to say that the collection will still be available when they display their pipes in Chicago. At that price I don't think the collection will sell as a whole unless a really dedicated Stanwell aficionado comes along. IMO the majority of Stanwell collectors look for the older registration number pipes. Just my guess.

I thought the price awfully high too, but a nice collection nonetheless. If they were all unsmoked I'd say they were worth the asking price, maybe even a little more, but even then it would be a tough sell selling the collection as a single lot. You're still hoping for that one collector who both wants and can afford the whole lot. As Doc pointed out, they're interesting, but not really what the collectors chase. Probably would sell quicker if sold individually, as a lot of small timers would want to grab one or two here and there. In my opinion, they're worth $75-$100 each.

PD,
I think your price estimation is pretty much right on. Even the nice older reg. no. pipes usually command up to $70. tops IMO doing price comparisons. But who's to say that some newcomer doesn't want an instant collection? Time will tell.

I almost added it to my basket by accident!
I love a nice collection, but to me, simply collecting a POY from every year is too easy, like collecting every plate from a Franklin Mint collection. It just doesn't say as much about the collector's taste, or personality, as a thoughtfully assembled, but more eclectic assemblage would. I like certain brands, but not every pipe of the year is one I would want.

It's a funny thing about collecting items that are basically made to be collectible. POY pipes are one example. Franklin mint, certain coins, years ago Jim Beam bottles, Hummels, etc. etc. Are items that were produced to be future collectibles. it turns out that as time passes, so many of these items were produced (even ltd. editions) that today they don't even bring 10 cents on the dollar in value. One example of pipes that have very little collectible value IMO are the 1980's Comoy Christmas pipes. If they are not the early pipes with the 3 piece stem logos they aren't worth very much at all. I believe that it's the same with the Stanwell series of POY pipes. This doesn't mean that they are not good smoking pipes, it just means that the collector base and future value is nil. Just my opinion of course. What's your take on this?

When I saw the collection I thought it was a really neat idea. If I was into Stanwell year pipes I'd be all over that. I think it's kind of a limited market.

Collecting any pipe as an investment is plain crazy. Some pipes wind up being wildly collectible, the Comoy Blue Riband for example. Others, even high dollar others, you can't even get your money back out of.

I think it's interesting to look at the estate market an the dollar return versus the value of the pipe. A Dunhill that retailed for $600 new might bring $300 lightly smoked. A Peterson $100 new usually brings $60-$70 lightly smoked. Peterson is the better investment if your thinking you might sell your pipes one day.

Just some interesting stuff to consider. All this market value, worth, pricing, crap really hurts my head. All I want to do is smoke good tobacco out of good pipes.

I think the phrase "made to be collectable" is absolutely key here, and as mentioned, the high numbers produced basically negate the notion of a "limited edition".
That, and the set is only of value if complete. And that's a lot of Currier and Ives, Hummel, Rockwell, Elvis plates...etc.

I don't see those Stanwell POY's as "Made to be collectables" insofar as they were intended to be valuable or hold value, rather, I think they're more commemoratives, curiosities, special little things for the Stanwell fan who likes to see a Christmas pipe or POY or some other such reason to buy another fun pipe. They usually made a point of saying "This years POY was designed by ......", and they put a little stamp or metal tag on it with some mention of the reason for the pipe. Just a fun thing for Stanwell enthusiasts, a collectable intended to be used, not a thing designed to be rare or valuable years down the road. That's the way I see em anyhow.

Good point PD. they are definitely made to be used unlike many other collectible items. Being able to enjoy something that is usable as well as collectible puts this in a different perspective.

This is all true.
The number of pipes and the chronological order suggests that this meant something to someone, and apparently still does, as it looks like the set has been sold, maybe to someone nostalgic for the days when Stannies were made in Denmark. And adding one pipe a year for twenty seven years is kind of neat in it's own way. This doesn't appear to have been an internet abetted "instant" collection (although it is now, just for someone else!). So, looking at it from another perspective, it is kind of interesting, just in a different way for me.
Thanks for opening my eyes PD, again!

One thing I have come across with about 20% of the pipesters I come across, is sometimes they have more money than sense. Typically okay guys (sometimes not), but they see something unique like that and they'll get the jump on it and not think twice. They will, though, complain about how expensive tobacco is getting. Laughing

Cool

Your analogy reminds me of an old hunting friend now departed who said, "Give me a $500 hunting dog and a $50. shotgun, not a $500 gun and a $50. dog, and I'll guarantee that I'll be the one who eats best." so in that vain I will take a $50. pipe and some great tobacco, and I'll be assured of some fine enjoyment. Does that make sense?? lol!
