Matches do hell on the pipes I've tried. Bics seem the softest for me.

You must have good lighting technique. My father destroyed a gorgeous La Strada Rhodesian I had gifted him. When I pointed at the mess he'd made his reply:"I have a son (meaning me) who will fix it".

No way I could without draconian refinishing.

Softest mechanical light for me, still a Zippo. Matches the best.

Its not the fire of the match that gets me but the burnt stick left over while I try to light.

Harlock that is really cool. To track the process. Looks like it really colored up nicely and evenly. That's a killer blast on it too.

I seem to burn myself too much with a bic. I'm okay with butane if it is a pipe lighter.
