PostSubject: Sidney P. Ram pipes   Sun Apr 14, 2013 6:42 pm

I just picked up two pipes on ebay.

New SYDNEY P. RAM IMPORTED BRIAR PIPE unsmoked,NR

New SYDNEY P. RAM STAIGHT GRAIN PIPE unsmoked,NR

From what I have found, this was a shop in the Chicago loop that evidently closed in the mid-1940's. That'd make these pipes 65 or so years old.

Anybody know any added info about these pipes?

Sorry, the 2 I got of the 5 offered were just under 20 and 30. High bid was around 45 on others.

STR Grain

The odd thing was 5 unsmoked pipes from that period. All of them looked quite nice in grain and finish. I'd guess they were a decent manufacturer doing a store branding like Iwan does.

Sydney Ram was a famous tobacconist on that area and author of a book.

I got two of the others (both billiards). The grain is nothing to speak of at all (basically bald), but no fills, well drilled and the the stummels and stems polished up very nicely and both look lovely with a fresh coat of carnuba. Both about group 4 in size. I have had several Sydney P. Ram estate pipes pass through my hands now and again in the past, including one with an original box and sock (long since sold), but this is the first time I have acquired any unsmoked. Looking forward to breaking them in. Old briar is cool.

I bid on all of the lots, but only won the two (both for $19.45 total which was a fine deal in book).

I have the feeling we are talking different periods. I got one on Friday, missed one on Saturday, and two of three on Sunday. Looks like you probably bought them earlier. The seller was listed as paulsjewelryandcollectables in Pasadena, California.

If we are talking about different periods, I wonder how many of them he has.

I have my first pipe going for the Ram Lovet. What I noticed most about the pipes when they arrived was how light they were. It is a modestly under #4 bowl with it taking a Virginia slice like other #4's but a bit too pack for normal smoking. Not much flavor registering -- no big surprise.

The pipe is almost feminine. Not a sissy but delicate compared with most of the current crop. The walls are thinner; the stem is smaller around. The stain really doesn't promote grain. Its on the monotone side. Combined with the sizing, I rather like it. Maybe an English elegance of days gone by. Or, I'm just a boring old goat and we mesh.
