An awesome plug knife with Australian red Coolibah burl, an aged tin of Jacknife plug, and a tin of Old Dark Fired, a beautiful cutting board with knife holder, and an incredible tamper that, as you can imagine is very special to me.

thanks so much brother,

rev

That is a sweeeet set up! Very generous of Mr. BH.

Put em to good use, John. You should start by smoking ALL of that Jacknife in one setting! Twisted Evil

That Blackhorse...outstanding...you are quite the talented man..have admired your work. Is it a hobby or do you also sell, and have a website I could look at. Use to work with Gary Ek, son of JohnEk...Ek knives during WW II.

Hmmm. Following a comment sent via PM I searched and found this thread. Understand that I have no problem with the rev posting this - but like most guys around here that indulge their Santa side all year long these things are at least originally intended to be carried out on the QT.

But, as in another thread started by the rev, it doesn't hurt for one and all to be reminded from time to time that this is indeed an amazing site...and what makes it that way is first, the way it was set up and is organized...and following from that, the guys that populate it. I know there are a huge number of lurkers out there, but the guys that by and large post and take an active part are an astonishing mixed bag of right minded and good hearted miscreants that should be horse whipped for their reprehensi...oops! Got carried away again. Sorry.

And to the Ek guy (sorta...you know) I'm a big fan of Ek knives. I use the Ek daggers as 'role models' for the ones I make. In fact, I'm working on a stunning set of twin daggers right now that fit into a block scabbard...the handles of which are double dyed copper and green stabilized Box Elder Burl that I spiral carved. Guard and spacer set are comprised of nickel silver, ivory micarta and Morta! I'm also doing a Damascus chef's knife, 8" of sweet VG10 steel with a handle of RED stabilized Box Elder Burl. Variety. That's the ticket. So...I do make knives to sell...or barter. No website. I have an unusual twist in that I usually make a knife specifically for an individual...after a dialog regarding use, personal style, preferred materials, etc. I make suggestions about steel, blade design, guard (if any), handle materials, local laws, etc. So instead of having to pick from what I like and have already made, you get a totally custom piece made to your approved specifications. I don't seek out customers. And I can and do send photos of past work when requested. What I REALLY like to do is make something that has meaning to the user...something regarding their life or the things they love. I do the same thing making my walking sticks, canes and billies. What I need to do is organize my photobucket site to have one album that contains a good cross section of my stuff. A few hundred photos should do it. lol Anyway, that's the story there.

And thanks all, for the kind words. It means a great deal.

Oh, you know it's not a problem.  I'm just shy, that's all.   Rolling Eyes

So for pepesdad...the EK Connection...here's a link that may actually.

A few things spread out over a couple of years. It represents about half of the things I've done.  Remember, I'm retired...I work for about 6 hours a day...every day...except Christmas and Easter.  I don't work fast, but then each piece is very likely being done because it interests me, and it's also likely that it's the first time I've done something like it...or I wouldn't find it interesting.  Circular.

Let me know what you think.

Very nice, BH. I was particularly impressed with the rope braid on the bone handle. I have done a bit of scrimshaw and maintaining perfect curves is a daunting task. You pulled it off.

Ah yes, the 'Campfire Tales' talking stick. Based on the traditional 'he who holds the stick tells the story' tradition. Themes from Robert Howard's Conan stories. Lots of research on the images. If you know the stories, there's a lot you will recognize, from the elephant to Conan pumping arrows into the giant serpent to Red Sonya, etc.

The damn thing is huge, and took over a month to carve. Guess who the figure wearing the fedora with the cup of coffee, standing behind the campfire is!

The most fun in making a walking stick is leaving the side branches on, about 2" in length and then turning them into a face, or a snake, or whatever. I've got maybe 20 completed sticks in my den with themes ranging from space robots to the Odyssey...magicians...a range of animals...quite the gamut. Canes, on the other hand are fun because of the engineering of the handle - how it attaches and how it's secured..aside from the carving theme of course.
