PostSubject: JETHRO 95 CAVALIER PIPE   Wed Sep 04, 2013 5:27 pm

I just recently picked up a Jethro 95 cavalier style pipe made in London England and wasn't sure who the manufacturer was but, the price was right. After a little head banging and research I come to find out that in 1995 the English comedian Jethro was inducted into the “UK Pipe Smokers of the Year” And there was a Cavalier pipe “Jethro 95 manufactured to honor him sponsored by The Association of Independent Tobacco Specialists (AITS). There were only 500 made which this one is number 45. Still unsure who manufactured it but, at least I know the pipes origin. It's a very well made pipe and without flaws, I know I said that I bought this one to smoke but, I'll have to rethink that being this one is one of only a few and I'd hate to get careless and something happen to it. After a good cleaning and polishing here's what it looks like now.

Since it's been smoked before why not continue to smoke it, just in a sit down in your easy chair manner? Nice looking example of that style BTW Razz

Fine looking pipe, Ron.
Go ahead and smoke it...what is the point of staring at it when it is made to smoke.  If you are not going to sell it, what's the problem.

I'm a collector, out of around 300 I only smoke about 7-8 pipes. Why smoke it when I have too many to clean at the end of the month already. Took me two hours last month to thoroughly clean and polish 8 pipes. I don't look forward to it. Don't get me wrong, I love restoring pipes, I even have 5 pipes right now I need to do for a customer but, I don't care to clean my own over and over, once is enough. Seven is quite enough to smoke and to clean until I can afford a lackey to do it for me.

That's the sump plug for draining the oil.

Beautiful pipe, wonder what it smokes like. Congratulations on a nice piece of pipe history.

Pretty neat Ron, but you have to contact someone that can tell you who made it for sure.
Does that drain plug just pull out or is it threaded on like the Butz Choquin pipes??

It's threaded sir. I read that it holds a filter in it just to soak up the resins and what not. Not one that would actually filter the smoke.
Yeah, More work, finding out who really made it.
UPDATE: Jethro designed the pipe and it was manufactured by Blakemar Briars

Another nice acquisition Ron! cheers cheers cheers

The reason I like the Cavalier or "collector" style as some people call them, is because bent pipes tend to collect condensation in the stem, unless the stem is made to perfection. With this style pipe, you simply blow the condensation back into the pipe. However, instead of ending up in the bottom of the bowl, the moisture ends up in the trap, beneath the bowl. It is really an ingenious design, especially for a 3/4 bent factory grade pipe.

I had a Cavalier made by JT Cooke some years ago. The drain plug had a hole in it so you could insert a Q-tip that was cut down to collect any moisture. It worked just fine.

Wish I could afford anything he carved.
In case you didn't see my update, it was made by Blakemar Briars

Thanks for the link Ron. That company has some history behind it for sure, and IMO not very well known this side of the pond. I've never run across anyone here that collects that maker or has much information about them. Grab a bunch of them before they catch on with other collectors and they drive the prices upward!!
You let the cat out of the bag so to speak. Very Happy

Oh what the hey, if I can't share the little knowledge I have, it's not worth anything.
They just have the basic run of the mill shapes and nothing that really blows my skirt up.
I only collect what I like no matter it's value. I won't even collect Dunhill's because most look like golf clubs to me. And the ones that do interest me are just waaaaaaaay out of my pocket book range.
Yep, Just another poor man in a rich man's hobby.
