An unexpected package from Briarbabe arrived yesterday containing knitted pipe socks and 2 oz of Boswell's Northwoods. I have not tried the Northwoods yet, but the pipe socks are really nice. Thanks!

My clergy mentor in the diocese smokes a pipe and told me he has a preference for latakia blends. We met today. I offered several things, and he picked Northwoods. I had a bowl as well. The pipe was a Peterson XL14 - so a larger bowl. It was remarkably tasty. As a rule, I have found that black cavendish tastes musty to me. That was not the case here. I got smooth and full, sweet and mellow. There was a nice latakia smokiness that did not overpower. I did not get much of the virginia flavor, but the blend was a good balance and not too heavy. I liked it. I will have a couple more bowls of it out of the same pipe and see if I like it more.

Here you go. Pictured for scale is a pipe I have had since the late 70's or early 80's. It recently got a new stem and a band on a cracked shank. It is a GREAT smoker - double stamped "Imported Briar" on one side and the name, etc. carefully buffed off on the other. It has nice but unremarkable grain and no fills. My recollection is that it was a "basket select" pipe that was on a bargain display rack and not in a basket.

You're most welcome sir and I'm very glad that you enjoyed the Northwoods. I hope the pipe socks keep a few of your pipes protected and safe.
