Right chaps, I'm off to Germany early next week so may not be able to post for a week or so. However, it transpires that the district I'll be staying in has a famed pipe smith called Nils Thompsen who has one of Germany's few dedicated pipe shops. I have a busy schedule but will make every effort to pay him a visit. Unlike Blighty, it's one of those places where you can still fire up a bowl in the shop... oh happy days.
Tally ho...!

One of my NYC pipe club friends is going to Germany this week for their national pipe smoking competition, but I believe that was somewhere in West Germany (or the former West Germany).
Take some pix of that shop, we'd love to see those shots.

Yes, yes Rande... I know the score.
I'm back in Blighty now but here's a few pics from my travels...
.

Brandenburg Gate
.

Reichstag
.

Me and the wall
.

Nils Thompsen and me at his pipe workshop.
.
Nils was superb.  He was very welcoming and we talked for a good while about his pipes and I watched as he worked on a commission.  In keeping with most folk in the pipe world, with everyone on the BoB being fine examples, he gave me a brass pipe tool that was made for soldiers in the German army in WWII.  I was blown away by this.  This is the genuine artical, over 70 years old!  I did of course also fly back with a good pay load (for me!) of baccy.
It's good to be home chaps!
Pip pip.

Well PB, here's the details of the loot...

Here's the pics of the WWII German army pipe tool that Nils gifted to me. When you compare it to the size of the Czeck tool, you can see it's actually quite compact, which I suspect was intentional to make it readily transportable in personal kit. It's made of brass and bears the inscription, *PRIMUS* RAUCHERFREUND, which translated means Primus Smoker Friend. It's an amazing piece of history and I'd imagine there's not too many around?

Outstanding! What a great slice of history, made even sweeter by Nils gifting it to you.
