PostSubject: Two Old Brits - Sasieni Moorgate & Barling's Special   Tue Feb 24, 2015 8:56 am

I'm up in balmy Albany NY for a few days. (minus 7 this AM) I stopped in a shop called "Edleez", which always has some nice estates.  I found these two family era beauties.  They came from the same estate, a gentleman who was a VP at General Electric.  GE's has a big presence in nearby Schenectady.  He apparently traveled to Europe a lot and good taste in pipes.

This is my first Barling's, a Special grade 225 L with patent number on the stem.  It's in great shape, the stem just needs a tune-up.

The 2nd is a Sasieni Moorgate in Rustic finish.  It's just about mint and just needs the oxidation removed from the stem.  This shape isn't in my wheelhouse and I'll probably resell this one.

I'll clean them up later this week when I get home, take better pictures and definitely light up the Barling's.

Classy pipes for a classy guy (even if you are a Ravens fan). Nice acquisitions.

I wouldn't imagine it would be too hard to find some interest in that second pipe. It seems to be pretty popular with the flake guys.

Hey Al. That 4 dot is definately in my wheelhouse! I've always wanted a pot and i love rustication. I don't think I'd sneak a purchase by SWMBO though LOL! Interesting provenance too!

Al don't smoke no straight pots, fool. Likes him them Ashford shapes. lol!

I may have stepped over the line there, wow. Kidding aside, if you look up Sasieni Ashford you see a shape that is similar to many of the pipes I've seen him post. That is all.

Nice Grab there Al. That pre-trans Barling is a FANTASTIC pipe. Bent shaped Barlings are not that common and command a premium over most others. And that one looks to be in magnificent condition. Congrats. cheers cheers

That Barling is a dang great find Al. I'd have snatched that one up in a heartbeat given half a chance. Looks in great condition and should be a fantastic smoker.

The Sasieni pot is an interesting take on a rustication. Not really a straight stem guy here but it does have appeal. If you decide to sell it I'm sure it'll be snapped up right away.

Cheers,

RR

Nope, you know me quite well JuanMedusa! I'm not a big fan of straight pipes. I suspect I will put the Sasieni up for sale when I get it cleaned up, if I can resist holding onto those Four Dots...

I've learned to read and even save almost everything Jesse Silver writes about Barling's pipes. So, as soon as I saw that nomenclature, I knew I had a winner. I know Mel Feldman used to be known as "Mr. Barlings's" but I think Jesse now has that title.

I finished both pipes this evening, neither needed much work.
The Barling's turned out magnificently, it's a keeper for sure. I listed the Sasieni on Ebay at a pretty high BIN, we'll see if anyone bites...

I have a Sasieni Slendaline pot with similar rustication, smallish pipe but a true champion

I just adore Sasieni pipes, especially their Old England line.

Yes Al, I'll say that Barling is a keeper. Very Happy

@Speedy, the Old England pipes have the same smoking qualities as the top of the line Four and Eight dots. Just because they are a "second" line doesn't mean they aren't good smokes. AND they can be had for short money compared to all them dots. LOL

cheers

I've never owned a Sasieni second. Is the stemwork the same? I've owned a few "The Guidall" pipes (Comoys seconds). Those use a molded stem that wasn't to my liking.

If I recall the stems were not the same and the bowls were carved/rusticated for sure with a black finish. But they are great smokers. Many of these were made and sold by private smoke shops. I acquired many of these from the Owl Shop in New Haven, CT years ago.

I have a tidy collection of Comoy Guildhall & Everyman, GBD Digby and pipe-shop seconds, and Sasieni Mayfairs. All are great smokers. Ain't nothin' wrong with a good "second." cheers FTRPLT
