It was on May 22,1980 when the little gobbler came to life in Japan!! It was later in 82 or so my daughter's grandfather bought her an Atari computer and it had the Pac-man game with it !! The irritating sounds it made are one of the hallmarks of the "Fab '80s", I still hear it when I go to a mall !! Twisted Evil

Nice write up. I like the anecdotal additions. He was definitely a part of my life though I'm too young to be aware of that initial wave.

I actually would blame the fall on parents... If they decided to spend time parenting rather than letting a video game system babysit the kids, I think it would make a world of change. Game systems aren't the problem. In moderation, they are a good way to de-stress for some people, adults included. The problem comes when the parents allow their children to sit in front of the game for hours.

I like the way my parents did it. We had tickets. Each ticket was worth 15 minutes of video game time. We had a weekly chore chart, different chores for each day, if we did all of our chores on their properly assigned days, at the end of the week we would get 4 tickets (1 hour worth of playing time) and our allowance which was anywhere from $2 to $10 depending on our age. Occasionally there would be extra chores that come up and we could do them for extra tickets. When we wanted to play the video game, we would have to have all of our chores and homework done (which was serious because we were homeschoooled LOL) before we could play. We would have to designate how long we wanted to play by telling my mom and then put the tickets into a jar that was on top of the tv.

It was great for my mom because we would LOOK for extra stuff to do around the house, it taught us the value of work, the value of time, and in a sense the value of money (tickets were like money). Just like a paycheck, you could blow the tickets as you get them, one at a time, or you could save them up and wait until your friends come over and be able to play with them. I gotta hand it to my parents, they had a great system worked out.

I know you weren't being hardcore or overly harsh, and sorry for the long post, I just wanted to give my parents some credit for doing a good job in an age where it's a hard thing to do. And I think far too many parents aren't even trying.

Like you mentioned K, some parents are also to fault. And a lot of parents outta be turned over one's knee
and given a good lick'en like they should have done to there children, instead of letting the little brats cause havoc and pester others. Yes, this has evolved into another aspect of child rearing, the parents that ignore there children and force others to deal and or discipline them. I get a real big kick out of these parents that don't discipline there kids and say "I don't want to stunt his or her creativity" Hog Wash! If ya ask me parents that rear children in this way should be sterilized and not be allowed to have children. All they do is push there burdens on to others and rear children that most likely spend the remainder of the adult lives in and out of prisons further burdening society. Okay, that's my rant, I'm done......for now.

CMA: This doesn't mean I disapprove of parents that don't spank there children, only those that don't Discipline and or teach them values, morals, etc. and give them a set of rules to live by, in other words
Being a Parent and not just be a child bearer. Suspect

LOL, sorry monbla. The first time I played PacMan was on a HUGE desktop computer (still during the dial-up tone phase of computers for internet connections). I had an Atari disc with PacMan, Centipede, Pong, and a few others. PacMan and Centipede were my favorites though!

aaaah! Atari!! I bought an Atari set up for my daughter back then and we would set it up on the floor in the living room and play each other back in the early '80s I believe. She was around 10/11 as I recall. From that she went on to work for Microsft for ten years before she started her family!! It was the first 'puter stuff we both did. I liked playing the arcade version better though. The sounds were much better !! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Wasn't he always a Milleniall?
I never got the whole Pac Man thing. Lost interest in video games after Pong.

Never really got into the video game thing. Played Pacman a few times but it didn't catch. Dropped a few quarters on Centipede but that lost appeal real quickly. Guess I'm not a gamer.

Cheers,

RR
