I recently picked up this pipe with what must be Sir Walter Raleigh carved on the front. The stem looks like a Peterson P-lip. It also has the name W.L. Conroy engraved on the bottom. Any thoughts on its origins would be greatly appreciated : )

Can't help you on the intel, but that is certainly one fine looking figural.

Cool

Cheers,

Larry, do you have a pic with the stem removed, so we can see what style tenon it has?

I thought so too, Brewdude. Also, I like your quote at the bottom by Ben. If we ever learn to live like that guy, we'll be Livin Large

A meerschaum lined figural with a p lip and a metal tenon? No clue sir. It may have been a custom job, or maybe it's an old promotional item.

Thanks for your thoughts. Those are both good possibilities.

Just my 2 cents, This figure was primarily made in France and as you may or may not know, there were so many pipe manufactures large and small that it would be hard to say which one but, W.L.Conroy is most likely who made it and was probably one of those small companies that never made a name for it's self.
And a lot of companies copied the P-Lip design such a WDC William Demuth Company and others.Of course the original stem may have been lost and what happens so many times is someone will replace it with one off another pipe, not saying that happened just never seen a stem quite like that on any pipe, I like it. A metal tenon was not that uncommon in the day either. Looks to be unsmoked with a meer or clay bowl, a rather nice addition to the standard all briar ones you see. Wink

Thanks Cartaphilus,

I think your 2 cents might be pointing in the right direction. I googled Sir Walter Raleigh Images and came across a very similar carve that the seller says was made in Italy in the 50s or 60s. His was 6" w/o the meerschaum & mine is about 8 inches. Otherwise very similar.

All pipes with metal tenons I've seen so far, were made in the USA. That's the stem part.

The carving, I guess, came from either Italy or France
