Well should we institute a ranking system? If so what kind and at what post counts?

NO! Ranks intimidate new members. Mad

I would even opt to null post numbers.

I like the whole "Working up to yoda" thing, but we could do without the buck private and board sergeant thing.

Actually, I think TeeJ has the right idea. What is that count business supposed to be for, anyway? The, "Chorus of Agreement" phenomenon (14,000+ posts for one guy on SF???) is all it yields.

My cynical side says the bb designers figured that COMMERCIAL interests might be served by such a device because it artificially boosts a site's post count, so gave installers the option, but it seems pretty pointless otherwise.

I kind of like the no-rank ranking system too, mostly for the reasons that TJ already mentioned. But either way is cool with me. Cool

PostSubject: Ranks & Post Counts   Tue Dec 11, 2007 12:45 pm

Brethren (and Sistren, if we have any yet):

This is a subject that deserves some thought. I've read all the posts in this thread so far, and y'all have made some good points.

From my perspective, ranks based solely on post count are mostly meaningless...meaning, they have some meaning, but the meaning they have doesn't mean much. Rolling Eyes

I have many more thoughts on this subject but I want to cook 'em some more, and I'm outa time now. I have to drive to Escondido and back today, so I'll have plenty of rumination time. I can't say I'll come to any useful conclusions, but I'll get to smoke many pipes on it. I'll be off the board until much later tonight, but I'll post my full blather on this matter when I return.

Adios fer now, amigos. Cool

Food for thought. We can make up specially assigned ranks and assign them to people as we see fit. So for example, if GLPease came aboard and we wanted to assign him the rank of "Dark Lord" we could do that. So it doesn't have to be based on post count, we could use any criteria we wanted. The only problem that it may create is that it has to be done on an individual level and wouldn't be automated. Probably not a problem unless we get thousands of users.

I think j has a good compromise. Give people something to play with, but not have it hooked to post count.

No need to keep track of thousands, I wouldn't think. Even the largest pipe boards only have a few dozen regulars, and the regulars are the only ones who would care about such a thing. (Or, who would "earn" a title in some way... it takes a while before something like that happens.)

Actually, follow that train of thought, and it starts to feel like the board version of the "getting nicknamed by your buddies" thing common to tight groups, doesn't it? Firefighters, military personnel, frat houses, etc.

How bout "reverse rank." Everyone starts as a Yoda and works down to PFC. Sort of like the Portugeuse Navy, everyone's an admiral.

OR! Let everyone pick their own title.

Everyone pick an emoticon for themselves. Fine to use the same ones. Based on YOUR "perception" of yourself at any given time. Could be a consensus sort of thing that "sticks." Like Yakimoto, Don Vito, Pee Bee, etc., but use emoticoms.

PostSubject: Re: Ranks?   Wed Dec 12, 2007 9:03 am

Well, the whole discussion of ranks seems to have morphed into self-ascribed titles, or reverse Portuguese naval rankage, which actually makes more sense to me than rankings based on post count. (I never did get how that's supposed to be an indication of anything meaningful... confused )

The first question is whether there should be ranks at all. Typically, rank connotes things like authority and status. Such commodities have their place in civilized communities, and can serve positive purposes. But often they are easily abused, both in how they're given and how they're used after they're received. I won't parse the specific positive and negative applications of authority and status, because they're really beside the key point.

The key point is that an individual's rank is meaningful only to the extent that it reflects the degree to which he furthers the purposes of the community. If we could devise a way to create such a ranking system, then I would say it's meaningful and even useful. If we devise some other kind of ranking system, we'll probably end up with effects we don't want, like intimidating newcomers, promoting quantity at the expense of quality, polarizing, fractionating, or alienating some members, and generally firing a 12-gauge at our own foot.

I spent the better part of my drive-time today puzzling out how to devise a decent ranking system. I came up with some ideas that are only half-baked at best, and I'm not sure they'd pan out even if they were fully baked. I guess I'm still not convinced that a ranking system is either necessary or useful for a forum of the kind we have here.

Nevertheless, if you want to see an example of a ranking system that's already in place and has been working pretty well for years, you can read how it works at these links:

It's a very practical system because the rankings are tied directly to the value each member provides to other members in answering their questions. That approach is perfect for a community whose purpose is support, wherein folks are looking for answers to their questions. There's no question that it would have some applicability here, but only to the extent that we use this community for that purpose. We all know from past experience that getting answers to our questions is only a part of why our whaht ayusses be brothahs, and evvihthang. afro Besides, I have no idea how to implement such a system on this BB, or whether it's even possible to do so.

Anyhow, rankings based solely on post count are virtually useless, as far as I'm concerned. The most useful thing I can think of doing with them is ignoring them. I'm OK with rankings that genuinely reflect an individual's value to the community (not that I'm proposing a way to do it)ówith the essential qualification that participation in such a ranking system be completely voluntary (i.e., each BoB can elect not to participate via a preference in his profile, or something like that), and I'm definitely OK with self-ascribed titles.

Unfortunately the help system that Vito describes would require a plug in to be installed and we don't have that capability. Although I can possibly make a request for it to be included in future upgrades. I'm starting to wish I wasn't so lazy when I set this up and just hosted it myself. Laughing

PostSubject: Re: Ranks?   Wed Dec 12, 2007 2:54 pm

Having thought about it for a while, I think the whole idea of ranks is counterproductive to THIS group. It's always struck me that encouraging people to contribute, through whatever means, does much to increase a post count, but little to improve on the quality of what's posted. My impressions of this particularly group (premature, I know, but based on what I've observed on the Knox board, now seemingly in a coma, and knowing that many of the rats who jumped that sinking ship are now scurrying about below decks here... Wink ) is that those who have something to contribute will, and those who don't will just read.

It's refreshing not to have to plough through dozens of, "Way to go!" and, "Me too" posts, here, or the ubiquitous, "I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm sure someone here does, and will respond." (Why these people feel it necessary to announce that they don't know something, when silence would serve the same purpose is beyond me... Oh, yeah. They're increasing their post count. Forgot. Wink )

So, what purpose do the "ranks" serve, really? Vito pointed to Apple's discussion forum guidelines, which was certainly interesting, but do we need to encourage participation in a group where participation seems almost automatic? We're here because we want to be here...

Dunno. I see no reason for "ranks." We're all just folks, chatting, sharing, enjoying each other's thoughts. I've always thought the ranks to be silly.
