Been on a Johnny Winter kick lately. Lots of live stuff back in his heyday.

Got to see him live just once back in '69 at the Midwest Rock Festival where he was the headliner that night. Memorable experience!

Gene Krupa during The BIG Band Era: Playing with The Glenn Miller Band. One song that made Gene show his talent with the sticks.....
Sing-Sing-Sing
Even though this was from my Dad's generation I do appreciate ALL the percussion instruments used during this time period. Gene Krupa was the best drummer in my opinion during the BIG BAND ERA cheers cheers

I have a remastered CD but here you get to see and hear the original

Good stuff!

Watched this and a couple other vids with Krupa, Buddy Rich, Sammy Davis Jr, and Jerry Lewis!

Surprising to see Jerry Lewis playing drums like that and while he's no slouch, Buddy Rich mopped the floor with him. Not surprising!

Thanks for posting!

Cool

Cheers,

RR

Brewdude, now that I can post links this is the video I wanted to too also watch with Neil Peart. KEEP your eyes on his sticks and the cross over moves he uses. He was taught that move by the late great Freddie Gruber.

https://m.youtube.com/results?q=neil%20peart%20drum%20solo&sm=3
PS
Buddy Rich mopped the floor against most drummers during his prime!!

Vasen. 3-pc ensemble from Sweden playing contemporary original compositions based loosely on Swedish folk.

Instrumentation-

Nyckelharpa (chromatic stringed instrument untilising keyed melody strings, and many sympathetic strings. A bit like a Hurdy-Gurdy but played with a short bow instead of a rosin wheel). Very ethereal sounding.

Note: this is not the nyckelharpa musician in Vasen.

Viola

Swedish Bousouki/12-string guitar

Note: Again, not the Vasen musician playing the Bousouki.

Occasionally they feature a percussionist playing a kit which is hard to describe, but nothing like a trap set.

Their music can often have challenging time signatures/rhythms that fall outside our western discipline. As well as complex melodies that focus less on harmony and more on melody. They're quite proficient at what they do.

Not that I'm trying to sell their music, but if you're interested you can sample some of their works on Amazon.

Here's Vasen-

Cheers,

RR

One of my conduits into contemporary music was this influence in HS, where our concert band performed this piece. It was one of the most challenging scores I've ever had to play as well as one of the most exciting.

No way can the footage reveal what we felt in the pit, as the percussion section was dynamic. I was first chair tuba back then.

I give you Symphonic Movement by Vaclav Nehlybel-

Another version with info-
