Rare film nearly 100 years old of Manfred Von Richthofen (The Red Baron) No sound

The following is a very rare piece of film, 100 years old. It shows Baron Von Richthofen, doing an external prior to a mission, as well as his putting on a flying suit prior to flight in cold weather. If you look close you will notice Hermann Goering.

The Baron was shot down on 21 April 1918 by ground fire. There is much discussion on who shot him down. See Wiki for the claimants on this matter.

To think this film almost 100 years old!  If you're interested in history or aviation, you cannot miss this footage. It was just posted online, and I've never seen anything like it. It's from 1917, and it's an up-close and personal look at the most legendary combat pilot who ever lived, the infamous Red Baron, Manfred Von Richthofen.  Watch the extremely rare, extremely old footage and re-live history.  ULTRA-RARE footage of the most famous fighter pilot ever.

Cheers,

RR

Very cool. To think this guy may have been a mythological figure if not for motion pictures. I didn't know the Red Baron was a real person until I was like 17 years old myself.

On a side note. I thought the hat he was wearing had a chin strap. And then at about 2 mins into the film he removes his hat, and the chin strap, it would appear, is in fact just a strap over his head. I don't know much about aviation gear in general, but what's up with that?

Ah, the good old days.........

Wood framed with waxed canvas stretched over it for the shell....... Two stroke engines for fast acceleration, and a 20 mph headwind could get you aloft in no time at all............

Jevv. Not quite sure what to make of the strap. The straps I'm used to seeing from the early days of aviation were attached to the back of the fur collar and then went around the forehead to keep the collar up.

Rande great footage of a rarely seen historical figure for sure.

Fantastic footage Rande, thank you for sharing.

Re strap, if you freeze the film it looks like it's holding a pad on the top of his head; logical as I can't see any other purpose.

I like the way there seemed to be a mad rush to get the kite out of the hangar, but then a very casual dressing and map reading session then follows. I was half expecting a glass of champers to appear!

Looks like the kite shot down at the end of the footage might be a Sopwith Camel or similar?

That was an awesome snapshot of history. I could almost hear the conversations in German in the background. Thanks for sharing!
