The burl (tumors) on American trees is not the same thing as a Briar burl. Burls on Oak, Maple, ect. are usually riddled with inclusions due to the way they grow. A burl that most people think of is actually formed by little limbs all trying to grow rapidly and in the same place. The Briar burl is actually between the tree and the roots and holds water (think hump on a camel) since it grows in very arid conditions. I'm not saying you can't, or shouldn't, make a pipe from them. Just that they aren't the same thing.

As to your lathe questions: Get yourself a nice 4 jaw scroll chuck with jaws that are deep (I use the Oneway with #2 Tower jaws). Remove two of the jaws so you end up with two fingers on either side of the block of wood. Your block faces that the chuck will grab need to be square to each other or your drilling will be off. "Close enough" does NOT work, any variance in the surfaces will show up in your drilling. I use a 12" disc sander to square my blocks.

The wood also needs to be dry so that the wood is stable and the pipe will not warp or crack after you complete it.

I hope I have helped

Arky, American briar, do you mean digging up a root from a Maple, Oak, Birch tree or whatever tree is in your area? That's American root wood, not briar. Basically their is no American briar, well that I've ever seen. If your talking " real " briar, that comes from a shrub type of tree. There is also root briar, so which will you be using? When using a lathe make sure your tools are sharp and your wearing full goggles!!!! Wood chips and dust will go under regular protective glasses. Watch your speed on your lathe, you need too also adjust your RPM's if yours is adjustable. Get a few pieces of dried American Root wood and practice allot before turning an expensive piece of briar. I use only aged 50 to 90 year old Algerian briar to make my pipes. Last few pieces I purchased a while back of Italian briar I was not satisfied with the quality or age, so that became expensive tamper wood. Briar wood that I prefer in this order: Algerian, Greek and last Italian. For me Olive wood from Israel is nice looking but really not quite hard enough if one has a tendency of smoking a hot pipe. Another wood I would NEVER use making a pipe is Pear wood, which in reality is from the root of the Pear tree, it's not briar. Just my preference from the experience I've had using said briars. Good luck and have FUN cheers cheers cheers

Everyone in Arkys defense he picked up that term from me.... the old hillbillys up north call it "American Briar" or "American black thorn"... its just northern slang.  Consider the source i picked it up from.... the shine they make can cause temporary blindness and it takes 32 of them to make a full set of teeth. As a matter of fact one of the old timers that calls it that has a pipe he carved from an old treated railroad tie....  THAT CANT BE HEALTHY!

So please direct any questions of it toward me as my man Arky just picked up the slang from me.

Other slang terms you may hear from northern member

Pole cat or woodpussy = skunk
Grinner = opossum
Marble eye = walleye
Ring tail or Bandit cat = Racoon
Choppers = gloves with the fingers cut off
Chromer = winter hat
Shiner = smelt
Lady of the woods = white birch
Pasties = good dinner of potatos and meat in a home made pocket of baked dough ... not ta ta tassels
Skunk bear = Wolverine

And remember that up north we are a few cards shy of a full deck due to the fact that 2-6 of each suit are removed from the deck

Snow Machine = Snow Mobile
Fudgie = Tourist
Yooper = Resident of the U.P. (Upper Peninsula)
Troll = Anyone South of the Bridge
Swamp Donkey = Deer

Michigan is a funny place. I've also lived in New England; it's even worse there.
