Arky, as far as price and good briar block at very reasonable prices where you can purchase a single GOOD block for as little as $15.00. Also a pleasure to do business with. Also look at the stems!!
Send an email and explain your a new pipe maker, you will be treated more than fairly. I highly recommend them!

Arky, take my advice and talk to him again. I'm sure he can find you a good piece of Algerian briar for under $10.00. Any minor mistakes and it's a keeper for you to smoke. In reality, the only way to learn. You should also practice on cut up pieces of oak or maple you have from trees near you. Practice makes perfect.

Arky, make a few bowls from the white oak, great choice in a hard enough wood you can work with. Just make sure your tools are always sharp. Just take your time, if the craft brings you pleasure within eventually you will make some good money. You can do it!!

Many makers also use cherry wood, olive wood and I've seen allot of strawberry wood used lately. I made a few pipes from local root maple and they smoke well.

Morta. Bog oak. Much of it recently has been coming from rivers in eastern Europe. Some of it is not as old as that which came from the peat bogs.

But for your purposes. If you have access to cherry, that could be the most inexpensive. Otherwise, briar is the way to go. Inexpensive blocks are likely to have more sand pits in them. And you will be tossing a number in the wood stove. That's the nature of this business.

You can always make a pipe out of most any wood. But you probably should not smoke some woods. You can practice on your wood pile. But the resins in some woods are harmful.

I highly recommend Steve at Vermont Freehand for ANY and ALL pipemaking supplies. Steve is a very good friend and you won't find better customer service anywhere. He does have cheaper briar (sub $10 as mentioned) and he will sell 1 block at a time if that is your wish.

As far as using alternate woods: you need to keep in mind the toxicity of the wood you are planning to use. Check out this website before you use anything for a pipe: Wood toxicity

Briar is cut into blocks and then boiled for days to remove any saps or resins in the wood. Then it takes months for the blocks to cure before they can be used for pipes. Strawberry Briar is treated the same way. Morta, or Bog Oak, is dried and then cut into blocks. I cannot speak for the curing process for Olive wood. I can tell you that I cannot turn it or be around it when it is being worked. I had a severe respiratory reaction to Olive the one time I tried to turn a pipe out of it. I was literally about 2 minutes away from going to the ER when the benadryl kicked in and I could breath easy again.

Please be careful exploring alternate woods for pipes. There is a very very good reason pipes have been made out of briar for well over 100 years. Also remember that just because you don't personally have a problem with a wood doesn't mean the person on the other end won't.

Just remember what I've told you and scotties22 gave you good advice. ALWAYS wear a cartridge mask when sanding any wood. Also some people have bad reactions to olive wood when working with it. I always wear a mask as well as full protective eyewear. Keep making some cherry wood pipes, once broken in properly they will last a lifetime. Also read carefully the link scotties22 posted concerning toxicity on certain wood, especially exotic woods!!!!!
