After thinking about it for a few years now I finally broke out my drill and had at it. It has an alminium screw in tennon that had a tiny draft hole through it. It started out as 3/32. Way too small so the first pass was to bore it out to 7/64. The second pass took it to 1/8. It will now pass a cleaner all the way to the bowl. I love this particular pipe but it always smoked hot and wet. The first bowl after opening her up was such a massive improvement. Much easier to keep lit and seems to smoke better. I set it aside for a few minutes and had no problems getting it going again with a couple of light puffs. That is something I could never do before. All in all quite pleased.

Nicely done! Those threaded tenons can definitely be a bottleneck for the draw. Never sure quite why pipe makers used them with such narrow openings.

Sound's like you've made a silk purse from a sow's ear Very Happy

Always good to hear of a victory like that Jim. It gives me more confidence to go ahead and open up one my pipes that has a tight draw. Up until now I've been too a-skeered!

Cheers,

RR

Well done Jim, glad it worked out well and now it's a better smoker for you. Just some patience drilling but well worth the effort in the end. Enjoy cheers cheers

Nice, very nice....

I also enjoy a healthy draw on my pipes. Sounds like you got that whistle opened up nicely! Very Happy

The worst part of it was that drilling it out caused the tennon to screw further into the stem throwing the stem alignment off by almost 90*. But a careful twist with leather padded pliers and she was right as rain again. Second bowl after the mod and I gotta say I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner. It was an easy fix and the payoff has been huge.

Now I'm going to have to revisit a couple of my own pipes for this very reason. Been ignoring the issue far too long and not enjoying those pipes because they smoke poorly. Time to put my Pipe Tech hat back on. Very Happy

Thanks for the inspiration, Jim!

Good for you sir, I've had to do that to quite a few of mine.
I still don't understand why they have to make them so small, even the newer nylon push pulls are too dadburn small as far as I'm concerned. 5)

Lol any pipe that can't take the skinny end of a tapered pipe cleaner is drilled too durned small. I can use a regular cleaner now but figured trying to overbore it to take a fluffy would probably end badly.

Yeah your right, to open up any pipe to take a fluffy you'll need to open the slot too, unless you don't mind a 9/64" hole all the way through your stem which will certainly give you an open draw but, cause other problems. Wink

Ya' got that right, in spades. I splurged on a Baki, and was very disappointed. The pipe met an ill fate, namely my temper.
