"Tap", starring Gregory Hines. Guest appearances by Sammy Davis Jr. and Sandman Sims, both legendary tap dancers in their day.

Always wanted to see this flick, and it didn't disappoint. Gregory Hines was very competent in his footwork.

And why am I watching a movie about tap dancing you may ask? Well, believe it or not, I once took tap dancing lessons as a lad. My folks apparently thought this was a way for me to learn co-ordination as well as an art form. I didn't stick with it, but do have respect for those who can dance like that.

Cheers,

RR

"Island of Lost Souls", circa 1932.

Based on the H.G. Wells book "The Island of Dr. Moreau", this is a gothic horror flick of the first calibre. Dr. Moreau (played by Charles Laughton of Cpt. Bligh fame) performs inhuman experiments on people, turning them into half men/beasts. Bela Lugosi plays a bit part as one of the man/beasts.

Great stuff for it's day and age, including and especially the special effects/makeup. Highty recommended.

Cheers,

RR

Just re-visited this flick after many years-

This is the Oliver Stone film, starring Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison. It's a very dark portrayal, sometimes disturbing, always entertaining. Some say that it takes way too much artistic licence and therefore not accurate. Me, I dunno...

I grew up listening to the Doors back in the day, and they were certainly not your typical 60's pop group. Something more earthy and primeval as well as experimental, as in taking a story and making it surrealistic. I didn't know all that at the time though, only that I dug them.

Anyway, I enjoy this film. Jim Morrison flamed out far too early, of his own accord of course, in the cacophony of the times. Be that as it may. Pity.

Cheers,

RR

Just re-watched this after many years-

Way great and tragic account. The movie does take some licence with the real account, but it's not far from the truth. Very poignant and moving.

Recently viewed-

Saw this when it first came out in the early 70's. Steve McQueen, Ali Magraw, Sally Struthers, Slim Pickins, and directed by Sam Peckinpah. Great action packed flick, plenty of hairy car chases and crashes. Sally Struthers was slim and sexy back then!

Always great to watch this 'un. What great soundtracks featuring all kinds of top notch musicians. Added bonus was bassist Donald "DucK" Dunn smoking a pipe whenever on stage. And he really was a pipe smoker-

Cheers,

RR

About to watch a weak man redeem himself in This Land is Mine, with Charles Laughton, one of my absolute top favorite actors, directed by Jean Renoir. World War II drama, with Maureen O'Hara to look at.

Just re-watched this after many years.

The quintessential account of the Stone's Altamont concert, and events leading up to it. Very dark and disturbing.

Just love Star Wars!  I've seen every SW film in the cinema so I wasn't going to miss this one.

Will report back findings.

Right, popcorn...

Well that didn't go as planned.

Huge thunder and lighting storms caused a power cut so we didn't get to see the end of the film. Complimentary tickets given. Will have to come back. We were really enjoying it too!

Just watched this upon the rec of a friend-

Way cool WWII account of a US crew that commandeered a Nazi U-boat and stole the enigma code the Germans were using and that the US hadn't been able to crack. And the drama that unfolded is riveting!

Dunno if it's historically accurate, but it's one helluva great movie!

Cheers,

RR

PostSubject: Lost Horizon (1937)   Thu Jun 07, 2018 9:49 pm

I think I was probably 9 or 10 years old when I first saw Lost Horizon. This 1937 Frank Capra classic has been a favorite ever since.

The 80th Anniversary Blu-ray edition (released in 2017, October) has been digitally restored, thanks to an epic 13-year project by the American Film Institute and the UCLA Film Archive.

Incredibly, the studio kept no copies of the original 1937 release. The restoration project scoured the world and was able to find a copy of the complete 132-minute soundtrack, but seven minutes of the film were missing. Another minute was eventually found. The remaining six minutes have been artfully filled with still shots of the cast members and scenes that fit the soundtrack.

BTW, this is not the hacked up 1942 release, which was molested for wartime propaganda purposes. This is the real deal...the original theatrical release, which (at that time) was the most expensive film ever made. The production values are superb, as you'd expect with a Capra film.

The sound and picture quality of this restored edition are brilliant. The subtitles are accurate for those who don't want to miss a word, but you probably won't need them. Unlike most modern day films, you can actually hear the dialog without the music and sound effects making your ears bleed. (Mastering audio for films is apparently a lost art.)

The 80th Anniversary Blu-ray has a bunch of special features about the making and history of the movie, including details about the restoration project. A small booklet is included. Also, you get free access to the film on computer, tablet, and TV.

Anyone who is a fan of this classic flick will want to pounce on this.

NOTE: There's a more recent version released on 2018, June 5 that doesn't come with the online access feature via computer, tablet, and TV. Get the 2017 release while there are still some left if you want the Blu-ray plus net access.

Fascinating look at the real (?) life of Dr. Stephan hawking. Not sure how historically accurate it is but well worth watching.
