I'll make a more in depth post about it sometime soonish, because it's a pretty cool story, but for now just wanted to quickly show off my new pipe: it's the first piece I've ever commissioned, and from the great Mark Tinsky no less. More to come, but for now enjoying breaking it in with some Blackwoods Flake!

Glad you like it! I asked him if he thought he could somehow fuse elements of his cauldron shape with a volcano, not having any idea if such a thing would actually aesthetically work, and this is what he came up with. When I get a little downtime I'll write up the whole story and use the pro quality pics Mark took, but couldn't wait to show it off!

That's a Tinsky work of Art. He's done a similar shape bowl prior but yours is extremely unique with that stem design also. Enjoy your new pipe for many years cheers cheers cheers cheers

Jesse that's super great. Very impressive. Mark Tinsky is indeed a very talented pipe maker and glad you got the chance to get a commission of your vision.

I'm a huge fan of Mark's pipes. Thanks for sharing. And looking forward to the back story.

Cheers,

RR

I'm liking the cauldron shape and combining it with the volcano shape works really good. Mark has talent, very plain to see. Smile

Not sure what the dimensions of the chamber are; the outer measurements of the pipe are 2.3 H 2 W 6 L. The chamber is basically a chimney, about as deep as the pipe itself but on the narrower side. Perfect for flakes imo!

Anyone who wants a fantastic Tinsky estate better hurry up and check this out-

http://brothersofbriar.forumotion.com/t35653-blackhorse-pipe-sale-4

I also own both of those exact same pipes, same finish, and they are some of my most favourites. At these prices you cannot go wrong. We all know our own BH has taken very good care of them and this is one helluva deal!

Think I have something like 6 or 8 Tinskys, if that tells you anything.

Cheers,

RR

Lemme guess Ted, was it this one?

If so then you have one of Mark's finest executions IMHO. It's very chunky and fills the hand, yet surprisingly light for all the bulk. And the extra thick walls make for a very cool smoke.

You scored big time on this, including and especially since it was the '12 BoB POTY. Plus, the army mount stem is a nice touch.

bom

WOW, Rande....
I'm impressed.....HTF....did you figure that out so quick??? I really liked the pipe @ $110.00 but the reality is I'm on a tight budget, but I watched it everyday. Today, once I saw Blackhorse took 25% off I had to do it...lol. I definitely don't need another pipe, but I've always wanted a Tinsky before I kick the bucket...lmao!

I'm not one for Military stems but this Tinsky pot...it fits perfectly. So, on the 15th I pay and it will be shipped. This month I buy no tobacco....that's how it is and just fine.

Hey, glad you liked it also. Caught my eyes immediately bounce bounce cheers

PS, it's A CHUBBY/CHUNKY POT. RIGHT UP MY ALLEY. ALSO LOOKS IN MINT CONDITION. ALL AROUND WIN, WIN SITUATION.... so I keep telling myself!!

Elementary my dear Watson.......lol!

You posted what you did, I went to the BH post about it and saw it was sold, 2+2=4. Badda bing badda boom!

No doubt it's in mint condition (and very probably lightly smoked as well) as Dave is very meticulous with his pipes. I know this from prior transactions. Wink

Great pickup brother. It'll give you many years of satisfaction, and it's already been broken in.

Now, someone needs to snag the other Tinsky from that same offer. And that pipe has been a daily driver for me for a while now!

Cool

RR

I posted this on another site on Aug 17, hope you enjoy it.

I will post links to videos that my wife made as soon as I pass my probation period here since I am a new member.

Today was an amazing day that I will remember for the rest of my life. My wife and I brought our oldest son back to college yesterday. He is a Senior at Montana State University. We are spending a week at my parents cabin near Helena. Last week, I emailed Mark Tinsky to see if he had a retail shop in the area, as I know that he lives near here. He told me to call when we got here and we could come over to his house.

This morning I called and he gave us directions. After driving through the magnificent Gates of the Mountains, we arrived at his home. Beautiful custom built house on the side of the mountain with incredible views of the surrounding valley and river. Remember, today was the first time I have ever spoken to the man. He greeted us like long lost friends and invited us into his small shop out back. He proceeded to show us around, and we talked about pipes in general. He showed us his lathes and other tools. I mentioned that I am a machinist by trade, and he started asking my advice about lathe operation as he is self taught. I was able to show him a few tricks about tool setup. That's right, guys, I got to show the Master how to do something. I am deeply humbled by being able to say that.

He said he had just received a commission for a blasted bent billiard-brandy and he would show us how to make it. He picked a piece of brier from one of the many bags he has, laid it out and started cutting and drilling. After roughing it out, he pulled a precut piece of rod from one of the many boxes of different lengths, chucked it in his second lathe, cut the tenon and drilled and fitted it. We then moved to the sanding wheel where he shaped it down to almost the final product. He looked at the grain, got his hand wet from a water bottle, and rubbed it on the pipe, bringing out a beautiful cross grain with birdseye on the side that was flawless. He said "kind of sad to blast this beautiful grain, but that is what the guy wants". I asked what he would want for it if it was a smooth finish, he told me, and I sad I'll take it. He looked at me in surprise, and said "Really?" I told him I could not watch him make it in front of me and not buy it.

We decided on a stain and he asked me a few questions about what I like. He said It would be done in few days if I wanted to come back to get it. He invited us into the house where he showed me drawers full of finished pipes to look at. I found a straight smooth billiard that I fell in love with and purchased it also. I am smoking the first bowl of ODF in as I type this, and I am in love with this pipe,

My wife took tons of pictures during our visit and I will post them when we get home next week.

These are my first pipes made by Mark, but they will not be my last. This man is a true gentleman and a class act. If you ever have the opportunity to meet him, I can not recommend it high enough.

I greatly appreciate you sharing your story. Yes, once your 30 days in " prison " is up PLEASE post whatever pictures you can. His 2012 BoB POY has risen to my top FIVE pipes with only one smoke. It's a beautiful piece of chubby briar and the mechanics behind the pipe is spot on!! I'm overwhelmed with joy cheers cheers
