PostSubject: odd afternoon   Fri Nov 10, 2017 11:16 pm

So, it's about 1:15, and I'm just getting to the third lecture of the day (Germany about to invade Norway), when a bunch of phones go off at once -- announcing the campus is in lock-down. As the building coordinator, I and one of the admins had to go around and make sure all occupied classrooms were locked, and then I returned to mine.

A student had been stabbed in a fight, and one of the witnesses apparently claimed the attacker also had a gun. (That was later discounted.) It took about 2 1/4 hours for security to determine the attacker had gotten away. As time went on, the students were pretty restless. The on-campus students were stuck, as they had no place to go. The parking lot exits should have been closed as well, which upset some of the commuter students, as they just couldn't understand why they should be inconvenienced. Rolling Eyes

The two had apparently been arguing which then turned into a fight before one pulled a knife. Other students recorded it and uploaded it (I didn't see it, but some of my students did). The knifed student was stabbed in the abdomen, but the local hospital has stated it's not life-threatening.

Sorry you had to go through this! It's never pleasant and no matter what you do someone will find cause to complain about it. Glad you're alright and I hope the kid heals up quickly.

While it was likely another student that did the stabbing, that actually has not been stated as far as I know

Gosh, far from ideal.

I'm guessing you don't have security measures at your campus, T? I believe many educational institutions in the States have setups similar to that of an airport?

Maybe some in major cities do, but very few. Most others were built on the outskirts of towns (on hilly or other undeveloped land at the time) and most towns have grown around them, at least partially. Pretty difficult to isolate (unlike some really urban campuses, where you could have security in at least some of the buildings' entrances). We're actually more outside of town than many; maybe two hundred yards/meters from the nearest residences, with only one road connecting (unless someone wants to climb down and then up a steep embankment, crossing the rail line cut through the hill). Over the last few years, gates have been added to most of the access roads into campus, and most parking lots are also gated. My wife's campus in New Orleans is even more open.

I just got to thinking...I did my grad program at Portland State University (current enrollment of 27K) and my daughter is currently in her senior year there. Itís a very urban school, right in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon (metro area population of 2.4 million). A month doesnít go by that there isnít a lockdown, a text message warning, a stabbing, a body found on campus, etc., etc., etc. And itís even in whatís considered a good part of the city. Of course, most of these events do not originate with the student population. Quite a different situation than a semi rural land grant university in many regards. But as I followed Docís account of the lockdown at his school I was shocked and very concerned. It took me a week to think...hey, thatís really a common thing at good olí PSU. Amazing how immune one can get over time.

Too true; actually, there are probably 2 or 3 lockdowns a semester (usually some sort of assault, although there was a shooting 2 years ago). However, those have all happened at night; this is the first one that happened during the workday.
