Well, I go back to work tomorrow so it may be a few days before I get a chance to finish this little gem. There is some pretty nice grain to this 1. I hope I can do it justice!

You do great work Crafty I'm sure you will do this piece justice. Super nice grain. Your two step staining should really make it pop! Take your time and do it right don't rush it on anybodies account.

Things were going SO well until the final buff when the buff wheel caught the lip of the tobacco chamber and the pipe went flying! Embarassed gave it a couple dings, still looks pretty good just deciding whether to do a complete sand, stain and finish process or say screw it and live with it!! You can see the ding in second pic.

Crafty...your stain really brought out the grain there. Pretty spectacular. Really.

If youíre going to keep the thing for personal use only you know if the ding would eventually make you crazy. If it was going to be one for sale, it should come out. Is the crease above the dent a natural void? I donít think itís a problem leaving that in. Funny how we tolerate a natural hole when One made by an eager & grabby wheel is so offensive.

Dang, but that grain-n-stain looks fine.

Agree with the appearance of the stain and grain contrast. Wunnerful!

And like BH said, only you can determine if the ding will stay or go, depending on intentions.

If it were up to me, I'd leave it.....

Thanks guys, this briar had great grain. I think I like the stem view the most, it reminds me of smoke swirling around!

Now that's what I'm talking about! Beautiful grain and you've really made it pop! I wouldn't be too concerned over the dent unless you plan to sell it. If its yours to smoke then I say it adds character and is part of the pipes story leave it. I love staring at the birdseye too, its fascinating what the grain does. Can't wait to see what you get up too next brother.
