Today I smoked one tobacco in 4 different pipes. The tobacco of choice was Carter Hall, and the 4 pipes were a Country Gentleman corncob, Sasieni Oxford straight Dublin, an unbranded meerschaum lattice bent egg, and a Preben Holm Traditional Heirloom straight apple. Each tobacco seemed to taste differently in each pipe. Because the cob was the first one, the tobacco tasted like it normally does, good and nutty. The meerschaum smoked dry and bland. he Sasieni smoked good and the tobacco tasted sweet. Then the Preben Holm smoked with kind of a sour taste.

Can a specific tobacco taste so much different in different pipes?
Does a specific type of pipe dictate the taste of tobaccos?
Or, am I just crazy with making to much out this?

What are your thoughts about all this?

Yup. That's the nature of different pipes on different blends.

It's up to you (and all of us) to determine what smokes best. Part of the journey!

Wink

Yes I find different pipes make for different smokes from the same tobacco, but so does the relative humidity, tobacco drying time, what I've drunk or eaten, whether it's windy out or too hot or too cold, my state of mind and if the pipe fairy has decided to bless me or not.

As always, there's nothing hard and fast about this hobby, hey I get different smokes from the same baccy and pipe. Some are superlative and others can be meh.

Have fun experimenting.

Cheers

Tim

You’re normal. That’s one reason tobacco reviews can be a very helpful guide, but shouldn’t be taken as true gospel for all. It’s a good argument for keeping a “piper’s diary” that records pipe, tobak, good/bad. Brief is good, no need for essays. Over time, your diary will tell you which of your pipes like which blends. Pipes are a subjective experience for their smokers, and some smokers are highly skilled at describing their experience, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you will have the same experience, for good or ill. But it is helpful to have a handy record of what you like and why you like it.

A few thoughts...One, what had you been smoking in each pipe prior to the CH? Perhaps some serious "ghosting" issue/s here. Two, JMPO, but meers were made for English/Balkan/some Ginnyweed 'baccys. I have never enjoyed Burley/VaPers/Aros, etc. in a meer; but that's just me! A good friend of mine smokes all kinds of cherry blends in his meers and just loves it!! Three, how recently had you cleaned your pipes. This might have an impact on your smoking experience (dry & bland, sour taste; for example). And, as the fine brothers above mentioned, our taste buds/body chemistry are different, especially as we age (heaven knows I know this!!). Four, some pipes just "do" different 'baccys differently!! FWIW cheers FTRPLT

You had better believe that the pipe makes a difference!  i did the same thing as you did, with two different tobaccos, and the results were similar to yours. The differences in each pipe are somewhat remarkable. Great question.
