PostSubject: Sour taste in my mouth   Sat Mar 24, 2018 5:21 pm

Lately, I get this sour taste in my mouth while smoking 2 of my estate pipes with burley tobaccos. Mainly it is one of my favorites, Carter Hall, and the other is Moe's Confetti. Both these tobaccos smoke great in all my other pipes. I clean my pipes after every smoke and can't figure out why I am getting this taste. Could it be the pipes? Anyone have any ideas about this?

I would suggest a good cleaning of the Mortise. Sometimes, I experience the same thing and give the mortise a good swabbing out with a Q-tip soaked in alcohol (your choice) as well as a wet swabbing of the stem itself. Let it dry a bit and retry.

Hope this helps.

Maybe because those pipes have run tons over decades of those blends and they have had enough? Laughing

Really, I'd do the q-tip thing Navyflake recommended.

If all else fails, you might try reading the bowls down to bare wood. Interesting that TWO of your pipes are exhibiting the same thing. If it was in the pipe somewhere you would think it would be just one. If youíre smoking the same Carter Hall in other pipes with no issues then itís a puzzlement all right.

Hmmmm. Does anyone else have access to your pipes, your tobacco? Does anyone hold a grudge against you? Have you slighted anyone close to you recently?

Iíd rather go with Jim Beam Black Label. Or if youíre going for power, Wild Turkey 101. Far better than BlackJack IMHO.

Do the two pipes have anything in common, other than the sour taste? Same provenance, for instance? Did they initially taste sour, or did the sourness creep up on you? I've always been apprehensive about "estates," what they've had happen to them over the years, and why they're being sold. I'll forgo citing possibilities as a matter of good taste, but the imagination reels with nasty images. If cleaning the mortise and bourbon don't work, I'd just drink what's left of the bourbon and call it good.

Save the liquor for a drink, it's mostly water and will not cut the gunk as efficiently as a bottle of .99 cent 97% alcohol. As for Carter Hall. It's not a high grade white Burley like in some of the C&D and other blends but cheap mechanically harvested Green River Burley that's had the life cooked out of it and soaked in flavorings and humectants.Shocked

Well, thanks for all the ideas. Last night I swabbed the pipes with some Pipemasters's Clean & Cure and drank the bourbon! I will let the pipes dry out until tonight and then smoke them again. I hope this cures it. I know, the bourbon sure cured me! bounce In case you are interested, my drink of choice was Buffalo Trace. cheers The pipes were a Weber Shellbrook and an old Dr. Grabow Casino. affraid

I smoked the Weber this morning and it seemed a lot better. The sour taste was gone. Apparently I didn't clean it up enough to begin with. As far as the Dr. Grabow, being as old and derepid as it is already, I don't think there is any hope for it. I'll just put it on a rack and look at it instead of smoking it. I got it for free, so no loss there.

On top of what has already been suggested, you could try a retort to clean them out the best you can. A lot of people swear by that process. I don't happen to own a retort, but I plan to build my own as I run into the supplies. If you, like me, don't have those supplies, you can plug the draw hole with a Q-tip, pack cotton swabs in the bowl as hard as you can push them down with your thumb, and then fill with 91% rubbing alcohol, everclear, vodka, or a grain alcohol of your preference. You'll see the swabs dampen and then slowly fill the bowl with the liquid. I use an eyedropper to slowly fill as to not overflow and ruin the finish of the pipe. In other words, give those two pipes a deep cleaning by whatever means you fancy.

Actually I've never had a briar turn "sour." I have had a cob do that, but it had been subjected to misuse and neglect. What I have had are bitter briar pipes. No matter how well you clean and rest them, they never improve. Every bowl of every type of tobacco, upon first light, tastes unusually strong and then descends into bitterness. By the end of the bowl your tongue is shot, and you wonder why you persisted. The only remedy I know is either the trash can or ebay--the latter with full disclosure, of course.

Never had any pipe turn sour on me. This, despite my lack of regimented cleaning routine.

Oh yes, I do clean my pipes. But not as much as some here.

Exclamation

Cheers,

RR
