I feel like I should add that for anyone thinking, "This all sounds like far too much trouble," there are plenty of do it yourself hacks that cost little or nothing. For those interested in minimalist, hiking, cold brew, and other simple-feed techniques, you can use the top of a 2-liter bottle and a coffee filter. For those who are piqued to roast beans, there are youtube tutorials how to use an air popcorn popper to roast beans. Or to use a cast iron skillet to roast beans. I'm sure there are hundreds of these type ideas floating around the internet. I'm tempted with the air popcorn popper method. The only one I've personally tried is the 2-liter bottle/filter method for both cold brewing (you do it in the refrigerator) and backpacking purposes. It works well, and it costs (and weighs) nothing.

Also realize, for every do it yourself hack, there is an entire group of people who feel that hack is blasphemy. To each their own. Coffee has its zealots and cults. For certain.

Coffee with chickory reminds me of the many ways that people used to make the coffee supply stretch in the past.  This was especially prevalent during the American Civil War.  Other methods included roasting various seeds such as okra.

I really like Cafe Du Monde especially with the beignets! I also am very partial to the Seven Hills Sumatran blend available in locally at Jungle Jim's.

I have used a civil war metal canteen with some nail holes punched into it with some success over a bed of coals...

Hmm, our closest Aldis is over 30 miles from where we live!  But then again, it gives me the opportunity to go to Menards! Very Happy

I've had the one in the yellow can with brown print. It was good. I hope this link works. If I remember correctly, it seemed to have a high caffeine content. I was racing.

Yeah...same page I ordered from.  Somehow I created an order for a Cafe du Monde coffee mug.  Good thing I noticed so I could cancel it.  I mean, I’d LOVE a CdM mug...but there’s gotta be is a line SOMEWHERE.  lol

I am way less of a coffee snob than a tobacco snob. I still buy big sacks of Peet’s coffee usually whatever is on sale, and make a pot of drip with a brown paper filter. I am always pressed for time in the morning so I stopped grinding my own beans. Anyway, I drink it strong and black. I have my measurements down and I use filtered water. I find that’s been the key to making a pot that’s to my liking.

Any of you home roasters using an original Behmor 1600 and if so, did you upgrade the panel? I find it difficult to 1 lb roast dense, hard beans. Last batch was Sumatra Raja Batak Peaberry and it was difficult to get to a Full City+. Best I could do was Full City/City. I'm curious is upgrading the panel would improve the roast profiles.

Anybody, any Behmore, any panel...is going to find it difficult to roast a whole pound of anything to a dark roast in that machine. I have the upgraded model and wouldn’t try what you’re trying to do.  Cut your weight to 3/4 lb or 1/2 lb and you’ll have much better results.

I have the 1600+ don't normally roast dark. I do tilt the front of the machine up and seems to help the roast.

I have the same machine. How far up do you tilt it up? What’s that doing? I’ve found that if I wave a cupping spoon over the Roaster right when you have to hit start the second time the beans all come out sparkly.

I just prop it up a couple inches, it gets the beans a bit more over the heating elements. In still trying to convince my wife that we NEED a BC-3 roaster, but she's not going for it...yet.

I like the Behmore, but we do like 2 or 3 batches a week since it only does a pound preroast.

I love some good coffee!  I prefer to do pourovers with a Chemex or Kalita, but a french press gets used too. For beans I usually order from Counter Culture Coffee. When nothing sounds good I'll order from Olympia coffee. Even coming from the west coast, they normally have them to me within 3 days of roasting. And to the horror of coffee snobs, I'll  even drink them now and then with fresh cream and sugar lol.

Got the Cafe du Monde yellow can Coffee and Chickory in this afternoon. Good Grief, now I actually have to try it.  OK, be brave. Loaded up my little treasure...a Hamilton Beach single serve brewer...put in the cold water and two measures of dark, rich smelling grounds (hey, this actually smells pretty good) and fired ‘er up.  Done, I sipped a few times just to see, then added a healthy dose of milk (maybe 1/8 of the big mug I use.  Dang me boys, if this ain’t some really good joe.  Definetly the best I’ve had out of a metal can...ever.  Rivals a great many big name brands on their city roast (darkish) blends.  What a well presented combination...deep full flavor, a healthy bitter bite, but soothing smoothness, chocolate nutty undertones, rustic character.  Like some jungle Sumatra blends or micro-lots.  I cannot convey how totally amazed I am.  I had low expectations...they have truly been blown out of the water.  It’s absolutely wonderful.

Just for fun I looked up a description of a Sumatra coffee flavor profile.

Check this out: “Despite a subdued acidity the tastes are complex and intense, and a chocolate sweet flavor often holds earthy undertones. Notes of licorice may also be present. Sumatra coffee captures the wild jungle essence of this tropical Indonesian island. A great Sumatran is creamy, sweet with a touch of butterscotch, and spice.”

That’s pretty close to what I get. I’m smiling.

Sumatran coffee is naturally low in acid. We use it frequently. For those with a "tender" tummy toward anything acidic, this is a fine choice. And, you give up nothing on flavor & taste!! cheers FTRPLT

I am quite surprised.  I think it’s excellent - and I’m a ‘roast your own’ coffee snob.

The experience of the first mug, brewed strong-ish with a dollop of added milk, was akin to Dorothy inside her Sepia tinted Kansas house, opening the door to peer outside with great caution...and discovering technicolor Oz.

Like all brews the ratio of ground coffee to water is critical. I think maybe moreso. I think I’m getting close on the Cafe du Monde reg and decaf. The Community C&C needs more work. I also got a bag of Community New Orleans Blend which has no Chocory...but got a bag of 100% roasted chicory too. Fun will be had experimenting.
