For those who get the Wall Street Journal or have access to its on-line version, there is a great front-page article on the resurgence of pipe smoking. Very Happy Says that large numbers of younger, college students (both men and women!) are taking up the pipe and shedding cigarettes. Sykes Wilford and Skip Elliott, among others, are both interviewed. Interestingly, Smoking Pipes is not named in the article, but The Briary is Suspect Sales of pipe tobacco are up, 5.3 million pounds in 2008 (52 million pounds in 1970!). There's hope yet!! FTRPLT

I am going to the Briary at lunch.
I will have to ask John about the article.
Skip is usually not there or Fridays.

I'll be lighting up for the first time in about 4 weeks today...(been sick off and on all month!)

Plus I just ordered my first pipe making kit from American Smoking Pipe Company, so that is another cause for celebration!

Happy IPSD all! Smoke 'em if you got 'em (and I know you got 'em!)

I was excited to see that WSJ article, and it's defintely true what they're saying about college pipe smokers of both sexes. Here's hoping they keep it up after graduation. (But I was a little surprised to see them use the "brier" spelling talking about the wood, even as they reported the name of the shop to be "The Briary.")

I'm with you guys in spirit, but I haven't smoked a thing since last saturday as I've got one hell of a cold. Pipe club meeting is sunday afternoon, I'm hoping to be able to attend and have a smoke then.

You mean every day isn't IPSD?!? Dang, that must be why I get all those dirty looks when I walk around campus smoking my pipe.

A little brag, I hope you don't mind. Mr. Vernon Vig, our NY Pipe Club President (along with other fine folks of the hobby) made front page news of Friday's (2/20/09) Wall Street Journal. The article, along with activities associated with this day can be found here:

http://www.unitedpipeclubs.org/
http://www.ipsd.eu/
http://unitedpipeclubs.org/Event_ISPD.php

Last night, over 16 members of the NY Pipe Club gathered, thanks to the generosity of De La Concha Tobacconist in NYC, from 6pm-8pm. De La Concha provided some table space in the store to raise a briar together in celebration of this day. We had a fantastic evening of pipes, tobaccos and port wines.

I hope you were able to celebrate the day with brothers and sisters of the briar.

Any time you get to gather with a group of fellow pipe enthusiasts is a great time.

Happy Smokes!

Lou, NY
