I taped the movie "Open Range" with Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall the other day. This happens to be my favorite Western gunfight, even better than "Tombstone".
What's your favorite?

I don't know, but the 'tin cup' scene in Tombstone is pretty hard to beat! cheers

I would have to agree, I found a used copy of Open Range on DVD a while back and have watched it many times since. Not only is the final gunbattle/fight one of the best the entire movie is excellent.
One of the best gunfight scenes in an older western would have to be from "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". You get to see it from several perspectives.
Of course who can forget the final gunfight from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly".
Oh, and then there is the one from "Once Upon A Time In the West".
Damn, there are so many.

The gunfight itself isn't much, but for pure buildup, you can't beat The Shootist. Magnificent film.

You're no Daisy!

Doc Holiday vs Johnny Ringo in Tombstone. It may not be the wild shoot em up, but given the build up to the scene and the intensity of the characters, it kicks ass! I mean, as soon as Doc shoots Ringo in the head he runs up to keep telling him he's not "The Shit" as he stands there dying. Doc is one bad MoFo! afro

The best gun fight in a movie IMHO was at the end of "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly". I would be hard pressed to pick my best western movie. I like them all.

I got to agree with Puff Daddy on this one, can't think of a better scene in a movie period.

Open Range in my opinion is one of the greatest westerns ever made. I have seen it many times as well as Tombstone and Kevin Costner's version of Wyatt Earp. All great westerns.

However, I am particularly fond of The Outlaw Josey Wales as the greatest Eastwood film that contains several classic gunfights. No one could out do Josey Wales!

"Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?" Josey Wales facing 4 Union gunfighters in Texas.

"Now remember, things look bad and it looks like you're not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean. I mean plumb, mad-dog mean. 'Cause if you lose your head and you give up then you neither live nor win. That's just the way it is."
Josey Wales

Granny Hawkins: They say you're a hard put and desperate man, Josey Wales. They're goin' to heel and hide you to a barn door. You know what I say?
Josey Wales: What's that?
Granny Hawkins: I say that big talk's worth doodly-squat. Now, them poultices be laced with feathermoss and mustard root. Mind you drop water on 'em occasional and keep 'em damp.
Granny Hawkins: You can pay me when you see me again, Josey Wales.
Josey Wales: I reckon so.

That's my second all time favorite western, JP. My favorite lines from it-

Bounty hunter #1: You're wanted, Wales.
Josey Wales: Reckon I'm right popular. You a bounty hunter?
Bounty hunter #1: A man's got to do something for a living these days.
Josey Wales: Dyin' ain't much of a living, boy.

I'll have to agree that Open Range is about the best western to come along in a while, the final battle is second to none, the saloon gunfight in Unforgiven is my second favorite, but my sentimental favorite can be found in this clip...

In technically accurate terms, almost no movie gets gunfights right. Amazingly, one does that's both an oldie and a Western: Hombre with Paul Newman. The reason is because Thell Reed---a world-class combat/assault shooter plus cowboy-era firearms expert---was hired as a consultant to stage the final confrontation.

There was also a minor crime film 10-12 years back called City of Industry that had realistic gun work. (Again, because a firearms expert was hired)

If you mean "best" gunfight in dramatic terms, I have nothing to suggest. As soon as the cartoon foolishness starts, my brain checks out.

Oh come LL don't be a party pooper, we all know it's BS. I also know that the pizza delivery guy doesn't get laid when he drops off the pizza but that doesn't stop me from enjoying porn. Laughing
