Are the old barlings pipes worth the money they bring? I have never had one pre or post transitions. Been watching a old very well smoked one and it is up to 73 dollars. I have never even paid that much for any of my dunhills and 2 of the 3 I have are great smokers.

I own two pre-trans Barlings that were actually given to me by a friend. I don't know what the price range is for them, but they are both marvelous smokers, though they are too beat up to be considered collection condition. When I'm flush again, I'm going to seek out someone to create lucite stems for me as I'm unfortunately mildly allergic to vulcanite/rubber based materials.

The one I am watching is by no way a collector piece. It has some charing around the rim and the bit has some tooth marks and needs to be cleaned by the looks of the pics. Just wondering if they were the holy grail of pipes?

I don't really place any 'faith' in any particular brand name of pipe. They are in my experience very individual entities. That said both of my Barlings are excellent, and genuinely old wood now. I don't know if they are the holy grail but they are damned fine smokers

Egg...

I bid on hundreds of pipes a month... I have for several years.
I have a feedback of 30 (they don't count multiple buys from the same guy but you see what I'm saying)
I bid a 'steal' price and don't look again until I get the e-mail saying I've won.
Its just easier that way.

Pre-Trans Barlings have a certain "mystique" about them that results in somewhat inflated prices. However, the price is set by the buyer!! FTRPLT
