Escudo and John Patton Cool Hand Fluke, though if I had Solani 633 or Davidoff Flake Medallions on hand I'm sure I would be listing them, too.

A side note, I opened a fresh tin of Escudo in November 2012 and noticed it smelled different. It used to be only that lovely VA/Perique figs and raisins but now though it still has that it also has something else. Tastes the same.

C&B Bayou Morning

I agree. Bulk, ribbon cut. All day, everyday type of blend.

I'm out, and now want some...bummer.

My favorite is Escudo with Solani 633, SG St James Flake and Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls a close second.

Escudo was the blend that made pipe smoking for me. I was coming from being a hard core cigar guy for over 25 years and it was the spicy sweetness of Escudo that made my taste buds crave pipe tobacco. It will always have a special place in my cellar, and I still smoke a lot of it since I first tried it in 2000.

HA HA!

Nonetheless,

1. Long Golden Flake
2. Luxury Bullseye (age makes a big difference with this one) 2 years shows major improvements in flavor.
3. St James Flake
4. Dorchester

That's very generous of you, RR.

For beginner's level Va/Per blends, Escudo and St. James Flake are my top picks and hard to argue with. Both are solid. A "hybrid" Va/Per blend that is worth the trouble is Haddo's Delight (aged at least a few years). Haddo's has really grown on me in the last year.

Forgot to mention C&D Exhausted Rooster.

Not a "true" VaPer as it has dark fired burley, but the P-weedage is a kick in the pants!

I like Escudo alot and, although it doesn't have much perique, Old Gowrie is also a favorite.

I'm not a big fan of Perique but Orlik's Golden Sliced is one I will smoke. Not a big Perique hit but it does have some "pepper" with the Va sweetness! Razz

While I'm unsure if they're universally referred to as "VaPers," Rattray makes the best VA IMO, and of the ones that contain perique, HOTW and MF are the best.

So many great VaPers out there, and most have already been listed. Escudo, St. James Flake, Louisiana Flake (yes, a bit of Lakeland scent with it), and others. I also enjoy many "straight" Virginias, and have experimented repeatedly with adding my own Perique (several different renditions of "perique", but two I know are straight & pure, I picked them up in St. James Parrish on a field trip visit to the farm!), and none of them comes close to what a good blender can do.

Guess that's why I'm not a famous tobacco blender? Rolling Eyes Now if I could just figure out why I don't go in the first round of the NBA draft as a power forward, I'd be content.

Acc another vote for Old Gowrie from Rattray's. Lately I've been finding 10+ year old tins imported by James B. Russell. Divine. Also Got some Hal OTW and Marlin from 1999. Can't wait to try them.

But Anniversary Kake and Peretti's Park Square and Tudor Castle are great as well.

PS Bullseye
GLP Fillmore
Marlin Flake
Old Gowrie
Escudo/ DH DNR (I personally believe Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls to be one and the same)
GH Louisiana Perique Flake (very understated in the Per dept.)
Irish Oak ain't bad either
Solani 633

At any rate, GLP Telegraph Hill has long been my absolute favorite go-to VaPer.

I have three tins of Telegraph Hill and two of Fillmore sitting in the cellar. Trying to hold off till at least next summer... Maybe I should just buy a ton of both so I don't feel bad about cracking them open Suspect

Back from the dead again!!! Good show!!! Not a huge perique person. I do have Solani 633, OGS (really enjoy this stuff!!), and Marlin Flake. I must confess I have never tried the famed Escudo Evil or Very Mad

On a side note: This ol' thread has soon fine Brothers from the old days on it. Hey guys, "Come back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean!!" cheers FTRPLT
