This is going to really cause a stir, but I found a post on another board claiming..

Better sit down for this one folks...

"Most sources say that he smoked House of Windsor - Revelation exclusively, However, in a few articles it was mentioned that he on occasion smoked HOW - Country Doctor and Middleton - Walnut, but by far his tobacco of choice was Revelation."

yup - he also smoked Walnut Smile

Revelation is no longer available - but it has been rumored to be coming back... long rumored Smile

You can find Revelation on ebay pretty often - not much left in the box unfortunately (perhaps a pipeful and a half left)

The real crime here is that I am in the middle of a bowl of Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky, which was the last bowl Sad DSK is fan-friggin-tasktic and also no longer available and not often seen Sad

Follow up - I have read that Peter Heinrich Dark Strong Flake is close if not identical and grabbed up a few tins...

To add to the above: C&D's Epiphany is said by some to be a fair replacement for the old Revelation.

Finishing the night with Three Friars - a surprise stand out, seems to be equally sweet and peppery - worth trying if you've been avoiding this three nuns homage...

Looks like pipesandcigars.com still sells the Revelation in a 10 oz large tin...F.Y.I.

http://www.pipesandcigars.com/revelation.html

Don't know how close it is to the stuff made back in the 1950's Question

Unfortunately not - the listing for the tobacco is there, but no purchase button - out of stock for some time now. Many vendors leave the listings up long after the tobacco is gone Sad

Getting near the end now - about a dozen samples left to go through today and tomorrow - will have the box on it's way on Monday or Tuesday.

Samplings from yesterday and today...

Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky - superb in every way

C&D Three Friars - a nice one

Dunhill London Mixture - nice

GL Pease Odyssey - this blend still eludes me

Boswell's Premium Burley - too mild for my liking

H&H Old Companion - no friend of mine Smile

Plumbcake - pleasant

Dominican Maduro - quite nice

H&H Marble Kake - nope, not for me...

Walnut - circa 1970 - really wanted to like this one - didn't happen Sad

Boswell Dan's Blend - nice - but not as nice as Christmas Cookie - sort of a mild version

A great pleasure all around Smile

Finished up today, packed up the box, trucked down to the local UPS store - and made the mistake of telling them what it was. No mailing tobacco from there Sad

I will make a fresh and more clandestine attempt to mail it tomorrow..

---------

So here's how it wrapped up:

Final samplings:

Mt Marcy - more molehill than mountain, but not terrible Smile

Uhle's Blend 300 - not my cup of tea, but also not bad.

4noggins Jessie's Own and Billy Budd - really liked the BB

A trio of orientals - the #1 was the best of the bunch

PS Navy Flake and McCrannies 9 to 5 - both nice blends

A few bowls each of some samples taken for trying later:

samples added:

G&H:
Ennerdale Flake
Coniston Cut Plug
Dark Birdseye
Kendal Dark
Glengarry Flake
Boson Cut Plug

Mac Baren Vanilla Flake

McClelland Club Blend - Ringlow Syrian

GL Pease Stratford 06

Boswells Christmas Cookie

Lancer Slices

SHPC VR Blend

Tins taken:

Tins added:

Depleted samples: (only a bowl left of each when they arrived, and thus, they are no more)

Orlik's Dark Strong Kentucky

Uhle's Crushed White Burley

-----

and that's all she wrote Smile

If you take it to a post office (not the UPS store) they will only ask you if there's anything flammable, perishable, etc in the package, and you simply reply "No". You don't have to declare the contents (but you can always just say that it's craft supplies). They are probably cheaper anyhow, and you'll get tracking #.

Thanks - my problem started when I packed the box - just a bit too much stuff jammed into the box to be sure the tins would arrive undamaged - I had hoped the UPS store could help me out with a box a size larger.

I will repack the stuff tonight into two boxes most likely to be sure everything is safe, and then it's off to the post office where mum is the word Smile

Well, she is here Cool. Smoking a bowl of the Greenfield and Winther white burley as I write this Cool . As the final contestant and divider of the loot, I am doing the sorting. Have a PB box going ( Smile ) and a box for the troops being put together, and am setting aside stuff for myself to sample.

Reports to follow.
