Question: can one dip into a jar of cellared tobacco now and then, but still expect it to properly age? Or do you you just not touch it until you really think it is ready? I have four ounces of PS Luxury Twist Flake that has about a year of age on it... can I pull out a few bowls, or should I just not even touch it?

What happens is it starts the aging process over again. But I do it all the time....

Well, 1 year old PS will still be quite tasty, but I would recommend 8 more months.

One change in my cellaring I've morphed towards over the years, is going away from one quart jars and using pint and half pint jars. Then I can cellar some long term but have that smaller 8 oz. jar to tap into over the years. Depend on whether it's a shag or rough cut, or flake, I can often get a pound into two pint jars and one half pint, or for flakes one pint jar and two half pints.

Of course the ultimate solution is to buy more every time so you'll always have some aging. Unfortunately, most of us don't have that sort of budget!

If you open a jar you don't lose the accrued aging, but as has been said, aging starts over. I never open a jar until I'm ready to smoke its contents. If you taste test a jar that has been aging for X amount of time and hasn't been opened with a jar that has, I think you'll find a significant difference.
